I guess my previous post was grossly misunderstood. I 'd love to see a travel ban. I just don't know how effective it would be without ALL parties/countries/agencies on board an in agreement to the same ban at the same time. I also wonder how willing the infected countries would be to such a ban. It's one thing to not allow travelers from country X into our country. But what about a ban saying no one can leave country X ? Is that even possible? Wouldn't country X be more than willing to get people out of their country so they have less numbers to deal with in quarantine and dying, etc? I would think country X is happy to have anyone leave travel out at at time like this. And if such a ban went in, how would country X get supplies, relief, aid, doctors into their country ?

You could have military transport in supplies as it is now we are still also shipping in and out of infected areas via cargo ships

Yes, he is classified as low risk, but if the virus starts spreading among the homeless population it will be very difficult to contain.

Duncan is not receiving experimental medication. Doctor's fear that experimental might worsen his condition.

Several things about this bother me. He's not showing symptoms? Really ? I thought they did not know where he was , so how could they know that ? What about the other people who rode in the same ambulance? I 'll assume it picked up more than one person between dropping off Duncan and being 'taken out of service' about 48 hrs later. Where are the others? Did they locate all of them because they had addresses and cleared them all already ? Is there some particular reason they seek this man , as in they KNEW there was some fluids of Duncan's in the ambulance at the time he rode? The homeless do not have tv, internet, radio,etc. in most cases, so the community may be in the dark about ebola even being in Dallas. Hopefully they will print out fliers and distribute them far and wide about the risk.

Question for the medical professionals among us. Ebola is still highly contagious after the person has died. Is this something that is true or common with other viruses? Just curious.

The fluids emitted by the corpse would still contain live virus cells for a time ( probably less than a week, maybe less than 5 days but for a time).

The protocol should be to cremate remains in a crematorium which has personal protection equipment ( isolation, respirators, special disposable glove covers) available. I imagine that such a high level security crematory already exists in the US. There are other conditions which render a body hazardous.
Ebola is certainly not the only hazardous biological a fresh corpse could be harboring. The family should not expect any ashes back. Nothing. Put up a marker where no grave is, and be thankful they didn't get Ebola is the best outcome.

Marburg virus may be on the rise. This is the double- headed beast of nightmares for trained clinicians. IF Marburg turns into an epidemic, there's no way the world's health care infrastructure can battle both at the same time. Not in Africa, not in the USA, not in any other first world country. If you pray, pray that Marburg does not spread.

IF an epidemic of Marburg breaks out while the Ebola is raging, there is no country in the WORLD which can fight both in high numbers. Not the USA, not any other first world country.

And as far as Africa, there's no way to even try to contain and eradicate both. This is a true nightmare from hell situation IF many people are affected by Marburg already.

Among those, the CDC has tested the blood of 15 possible Ebola patients and found only one patient who tested positive, according to Dr. Beth Bell, director of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases.

The most worrisome concern for the authorities is that they have been unable to find a homeless man who was exposed to the ambulance in which Mr Duncan rode while he was shedding the virus, as we all know.

There's a fear that the homeless community would not seek treatment when needed. There's more, but I'll leave it at that.

Can all these machines used in the hospital on Duncan be cleaned effectively to decontaminate them? It is the next person to use them that concerns me.

ETA: This was being posted as news of Duncan's death was, so it is not meant to be cruel!

Yeah how heartwarming, they know they will be SUED if he gets sick. Heck I see lawsuits regardless, I wonder if someone will try to sue on Duncan's behalf since he wasn't diagnosed on his first trip tot he hospital?

I read an article that said they didn't take the ambulance out of service (or sanitize it) after they transported Duncan, in fact I believe they used it for 24-48 hours so I wonder if more patients could have been infected but they can't locate ONE man and that is what the article is about. That is a HUGE screw up, the EMT workers KNEW and were wearing protective gear yet they let the ambulance stay in service without cleaning it?

Exactly. Duncan's relative warned them Duncan was from Africa and had a virus.
Seems like a lot of people are way too complacent.
