The worker, a staffer for Medecins Sans Frontieres, or Doctors Without Borders, was placed into quarantine Friday upon arrival at New Jersey’s Newark International Airport, a day after a New York City doctor who also worked with the group overseas tested positive for the deadly disease.

Medecins Sans Frontieres confirmed the worker is one of its staffers. The worker initially had no symptoms when placed in quarantine, but developed a fever Friday night and was placed in isolation at University Hospital in Newark, the New Jersey Department of Health said in a statement.

Regarding hand washing: I've read that even if soap isn't available, scrubbing your hands together in water, while singing the birthday song, is long enough to remove germs due to the friction. Not sure if it's true, but...

police threw their gloves in public trash

According to what I heard on the radio this evening (and it was either CNN or FoxNews, I forget which), the police who threw away their gloves had not been in the doctor's apartment. The guest on the news program wanted to make that clear, she was pretty emphatic about it.

Since it's radio I can't provide a link. It's also a news story on Huffington Post, but I forget if we're allowed to link there.

There are five airports people traveling from ebola outbreak countries can fly in to the USA. Three of those five now have mandatory quarantines for anyone who had direct contact with a person with ebola. DC and Atlanta are the two that don't.

If there is no soap, it might be better to use hand sanitizer. Here is what cdc says.
"Clean hands with soap and water immediately after gloves are removed or when changing gloves. (When soap is not available, use waterless alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.) Use only soap and water if hands are visibly dirty."

http://entertainthis.usatoday.com/2...ie-mandel-explains-why-hes-happy-about-ebola/

On Live with Kelly and Michael today, Howie Mandel, a germaphobe, explained why he's not too concerned about catching ebola - pretty funny!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXSGFyPbEtA

Haha, omg, as a fellow germaphobe, my words exactly!!

I read Howie's Book, Don't Touch This ( I think that's the title...). It's actually really sad, some of the circumstances leading up to his germaphobia...insects laid eggs under his skin at the beach iirc when he was a kid-- he suffered tremendously physically (and otherwise); I remember his heartwarming accounts of how his mother cared for him and his wounds...

Ebola: Quarantined nurse who flew to New Jersey from West Africa develops http://www.chicagotribune.com/lifestyles/health/chi-ebola-new-york-20141024-story.html#page=1

The Chicago Tribune is usually pretty good but the author writes incorrectly that the doctor returning from Guinea to New York "came back infected." It's a poor choice of words since it implies he was sick and contagious went be arrived. Medically, he is only considered to have the ebola virus, eg, be infected when symptoms, especially a fever occur.

Husband let me know today that body fluids are still infectious after blood tests negative for ebola. So I found a source: "People remain infectious as long as their blood and body fluids, including semen and breast milk, contain the virus. Men who have recovered from the disease can still transmit the virus through their semen for up to 7 weeks after recovery from illness." http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs103/en/

Very true, but soap and water is always best, along with friction from rubbing. I always use soap and water at the hospital. I only use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when nothing else on the planet is available or during an emergency and there is no time. (But I've already washed w/ soap and water after leaving a patient's room anyway). C. difficile is not eliminated by alcohol-based hand sanitizers. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20429659 and C. diff is such a problem in hospitals.
