El Chapo's wife opens drive to build 'Chapo' fashion brand

Apr 05, 2019

"MEXICO CITY (AP) - The wife of convicted drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has launched an appeal to fashion designers to propose designs for a clothing line named after her husband.

Emma Coronel posted a message on her Instagram account this week saying “I invite clothing designers who are starting out and who want to join the project, to work with me.”

Coronel has dubbed the line “El Chapo Guzmán: JGL,” but she has had a little trouble registering her husband’s name as a trademark. Authorities say the fact that it’s the name of a criminal “violates public order, morality, and good manners.”

She has also struggled with exactly what contribution to fashion could be made by a short, stocky man who was best known for fleeing through sewers in a filthy tank-top T-shirt.

Coronel wrote that “my goal is to project my style and Joaquin’s, but to please everybody.”..."

'El Chapo' brand, helmed by beauty queen wife Emma Coronel Aispuro, violates 'morality': authorities

Apr 05, 2019

"Orange might not be the new black after all.

The powers-that-be were apparently paying attention earlier this week when Emma Coronel Aispuro, the 29-year-old beauty queen wife of convicted drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman said her husband – from behind bars – had handed over the rights to his infamous name and provided his signature for a new company -- El Chapo Guzman: JGL LLC.

But Coronel soon discovered it's not quite that easy to make money off the name of a convicted drug trafficker (who also dabbled in mass murder and money laundering).

Authorities are fighting back, frustrating Coronel's efforts to register Chapo's name as a trademark and charging that Coronel's business glorifying the cartel kingpin "violates public order, morality and good manners," according to the Associated Press.

Mariel Colon, a legal representative for Chapo, had confirmed to Fox News that production was in process and the line – likely to be comprised of caps and jackets bearing the former Sinaloa cartel kingpin’s name – would hopefully hit store shelves by summer...."

"A top lieutenant in the drug cartel led by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera pleaded guilty to a drug conspiracy Wednesday in federal court in Chicago.

Jesus Raul Beltran Leon, 35, admitted his role in the sale of 46 kilograms of cocaine sold in Los Angeles between June 8 and June 10 in 2013.

Beltran Leon now faces a maximum penalty of life in prison. He admitted his guilt in court after signing a written plea declaration, meaning he did not reach a deal with the government.

Sentencing in federal court in Chicago was set for July 10, but it could take multiple hearings to decide his fate...."

Prosecutors say El Chapo shouldn't get a new trial or hearing to question juror conduct

April 29, 2019

"(CNN)Prosecutors don't think Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman should get a new trial, or that jurors should be brought back to court for an evidentiary hearing to see if there was any juror misconduct during the Mexican drug lord's nearly three-month trial, according to a court filing Monday.

Guzman, once the leader of a murderous drug cartel in Mexico, was convicted in February of running a continuing criminal enterprise and other drug-related charges. He will be sentenced on June 25.

In March, Guzman's attorneys asked US District Judge Brian Cogan to call the 18 jurors back for an evidentiary hearing to find out if there had been juror misconduct, and for a new trial....

Prosecution: circumstances don't justify a new trial...

Jurors deliberated for six days and sent back 14 notes to the court during deliberations, which prosecutors say, shows the jury "was diligently reviewing and scrutinizing evidence."

Prosecutors say there are "no extraordinary circumstances justifying a new trial" and that Guzman's arguments for a new trial and hearing to question jurors are based on "the anonymous, unsworn, uncorroborated, heresy and double-heresy allegations" from the Vice News article, adding that they don't meet the strict standard for a post-trial hearing....

My story @vicenews on the latest El Chapo development. Prosecutors really don't want him to get a new trial just because I spoke with a juror.

El Chapo's prosecutors say our interview with a juror isn't enough to get him a new trial

Apr 30, 2019

"...On Monday, the U.S Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York filed a 96-page rebuttal (see PDF below) to El Chapo’s request for a new trial, offering Judge Brian Cogan a litany of reasons and legal precedents for why the jury’s verdict should be allowed to stand. Prosecutors argued that Cogan should be skeptical of VICE News’ story, but they also laid out the case for why Chapo doesn't deserve a new trial even if the reporting is entirely accurate.

“The defendant is not innocent,” the prosecutors wrote. “He committed horrific crimes as the co-leader of the Sinaloa cartel, and the jury rightfully convicted him based on the overwhelming evidence the government presented.”

What happens next is entirely up to the judge. ...."

Will Chapo get a retrial? The U.S. government just filed a response arguing against such a request, stating: “The defendant’s motion rests entirely upon an anonymously sourced, uncorroborated article” by @VICE.

D5XTLzrXoAESovJ.png

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer Apr 29
The government continued in its argument against retrial for Chapo: “the VICE News Article raises no concern that the defendant is innocent and that the jury wrongfully convicted him,” adding that “a new trial is not justified.”

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer Apr 29
The government's argument against a Chapo retrial continues for 99 pages (compared to the defense's original 25) and reads at times like a recounting of 4-month trial. Lest we forget, Chapo is a: "ruthless, bloodthirsty and cruel leader of the prolific Sinaloa Cartel."

D5XUqJZWsAA2CeD.png

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer Apr 29
After pouring through evidence recounted by witnesses and recordings during the trial, the government then dips into voir dire. We can't know the identities of the jurors, so those sections are blacked out:

D5XWLAaXoAAgnAu.jpg

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer Apr 29
Also amongst the government’s arguments for a retrial: the fact that the court warned jurors against looking at the media. (This would of course be a moot point, if they went ahead and did so anyway.)

D5XXFwsXsAgTcPg.jpg

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer Apr 29
I’m Tweeting as I read thru 99 pages. As of page 25, my favorite part is when the government quotes the judge to the judge, including a fully redacted encounter the judge had with jurors about media coverage they might or might not have seen during the trial:

D5XYFDRW4AAHuEd.jpg

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer Apr 29
If you missed it: In March Chapo’s defense requested a retrial, citing "bombshell disclosures” of a juror, who told @VICE reporter @keegan_hamilton at least 5 jurors followed media coverage during the trial. The government’s response today refers to him/ her as “Alleged Juror.”

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer Apr 29
Chapo's attorney @NYCDefenseLaw called the government's response a "desperate" attempt "to avoid a hearing which would include testimony from the jurors," adding: "They know full well it will reveal that the jurors systematically lied to the judge" about following media coverage.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer Apr 29
In short, the government’s argument could be summed in this one succinct graph, undercutting the validity of the juror’s statements, right after upholding the jury’s ultimate verdict:

D5Xbh0rXkAMGwXU.jpg

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer Apr 29
The government also argues that the horrific stories of torture and murder presented at Chapo’s trial are “equally as horrific as, if not more horrific than, the allegations of sexual relations with underage girls.” Note: in this case “sexual relations” are allegations of rape.

D5Xd3AXW0AELP6J.jpg

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer Apr 29
The government calls a hearing to consider a Chapo retrial “unnecessary.” Chapo’s attorney, @NYCDefenseLaw, said the case had never been more than a “glorified inquisition and the government’s refusal to simply hear from the jurors seals it.” The judge will decide.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer Apr 29
So, what’s next? Now that both sides have argued for and against a possible Chapo retrial, they will likely both make oral arguments in front of the judge in an open court, before the judge decides either way.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer Apr 29
P.S.: I said that the government’s motion was 99 pages. The full document is 99 pages, but without cover page and table of contents, it’s a mere 96.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer Apr 29
P.P.S.: The government’s request to partially seal this motion arguing against a hearing for a retrial brings back such good memories of all the other documents they sealed fully and partially over the four-month trial.

El Chapo asks judge to fire one of his lawyers ahead of sentencing

May 4, 2019

"...In a surprise filing, the 62-year-old kingpin is asking Brooklyn federal court Judge Brian Cogan to ax attorney Eduardo Balarezo, who represented him during his nearly four-month drug trafficking trial.

“I am writing the Court to ask you to terminate A. Eduardo Balarezo as one of my attorneys,” reads the filing, which is dated May 3 but appeared online on Saturday.

The document didn’t reveal why Guzman was canning the lawyer, and Balarezo did not immediately return a message....

Meanwhile, another document filed Saturday confirmed that Chapo is behind an eponymous clothing line, set to launch in June 2019 and headed by his former beauty queen wife Emma Coronel Aispuro.

“We are writing to provide a letter of intent from El Chapo Guzman: JGL, LLC to start a new clothing line that will be named ‘El Chapo Guzman: JGL’. The anticipated date of opening is Summer 2019,” the filing states.

Guzman’s sentencing is scheduled for June 25. He faces life behind bars."

In the process of unsealing documents from the Chapo trial prosecutors agreed today to release some stuff & keep others sealed/redacted. Their reasons? Witness safety, other investigations and in one case to spare a witness from having "a sensitive personal incident" revealed.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer May 5
Prosecutors are also trying to keep secret the search warrant affidavits they used to get hold of Chapo's private text messages with his wife & girlfriends--against the wishes of the defense. Judge Cogan will ultimately decide whether those are released or not.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer May 5
This is the third--and final--tranche of the documents to be unsealed. Even though the parties agreed to redact and unseal the second tranche weeks ago, it still hasn't happened yet. So we'll see how long it takes for this batch to become public.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer May 5
Speculation here but one doc prosecutors still want sealed is a letter about people visiting Chapo, presumably in the MCC. The sealing is merited "to protect...ongoing govt investigations of non-parties." At trial prosecutors accused his wife Emma of helping him escape in Mexico.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer May 5
Emma has not been charged with any crimes. But the US government seems to be investigating someone and there is sensitive information requiring sealing in a letter about people visiting Chapo in custody.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer May 5
As a side note, it is a nifty trick indeed when lawyers seek to validate the sealing of court documents by referring to reasons contained in judicial orders, which are themselves sealed. A perfect circle of secrecy.

Federal prosecutors in Chicago have just recommended a sentence of 17 years in prison for Vicente Zambada-Niebla, the son of Mayo Zambada and the heir apparent to the Sinaloa cartel. Vicente cooperated w/the feds after his extradition in 2010. They called his help "unrivaled."

Vicente Zambada-Niebla gave the U.S. government ‘unrivaled’ cooperation against drug lords, prosecutors say.

May 20, 2019

"Federal prosecutors in Chicago are asking a judge to sentence one of Mexico’s most powerful narcotics traffickers to a 17-year sentence because of the extraordinary help he offered them in providing information about leaders of his Sinaloa drug cartel and their rivals.

Vicente Zambada-Niebla, 44, coordinated trains, ships, Boeing 747s and submarines to move cocaine from South America to Mexico between 1996 and 2008. He also supervised Chicago brothers Margarito and Pedro Flores, twins who smuggled tons of coke to Chicago and each got 14 year sentences because they, too, cooperated against the Sinaloa cartel....

Guzman is expected to receive a life sentence.

But Zambada-Niebla — known as Vicentillo or Mayito — will probably meet a different fate when he’s sentenced in federal court in Chicago on May 30.

Even though he also faces a possible life sentence, prosecutors have asked Chief U.S. District Judge Ruben Castillo to give him 17 years in prison because he took the witness stand against Guzman and other cartel bosses.

Because he’s already been in custody for a decade, Zambada-Niebla would, in essence, get a sentence of around five years in prison — including so-called “good time” — if the judge agrees with the recommendation by prosecutors...."

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 12h12 hours ago
Vicente's assistance, according to court documents, help charge dozens of high level Sinaloa operatives. Most importantly he testified against Chapo Guzman at Chapo's trial in Brooklyn this winter. But new details about Vicente's cooperation were released today.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 12h12 hours ago
Among the people Vicente helped take down was Damaso Lopez, Chapo's longtime chief of staff. His information was used by prosecutors not only in Chicago but in Texas, Brooklyn, Washington DC, southern California and Manhattan.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 12h12 hours ago
Vicente signed “multiple declarations” to extradite cartel members from Mexico (including Damaso’s package.) His assistance also helped Chicago prosecutors obtain a wiretap which began in November 2012 and caught, among others, Chapo's sons discussing business.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 12h12 hours ago
All of this has placed Vicente and his family “in increased danger of retaliation.” "Having cooperated against...the leadership of multiple cartels...their children, family members, close associates, and rivals" Vicente would "in all likelihood be killed absent his protection.”

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 12h12 hours ago
Prosecutors said Vicente "showed no interest" in the drug trade at first and tried to leave it several times. “As a young adult he relocated to Spain & then to Canada w/his family in an attempt to escape the world into which he had been born and the violence that flowed from it.”

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 12h12 hours ago
But he always got sucked back in, they said: "Each time, fear of the infliction of violence upon him and his family, even in places far from Mexico, drew him back to the protection provided by his father’s organization."

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 12h12 hours ago
The government, as usual, has showed only a few of cards in public. Vicente's sentencing memo was accompanied by three sealed documents which likely to go into more detail on who he cooperated against--and how--in an effort to persuade the judge to hand down a lighter sentence.
