Elizabeth Smart updates

How can any parole board rationalize the release of this woman. Based on her actions and choices, during Elizabeth Smart’s kidnapping, I would say rehabilitation (when considering societal safety) is not possible.

““It is incomprehensible how someone who has not cooperated with her mental health evaluations or risk assessments and someone who did not show up to her own parole hearing can be released into our community,” Smart said in a statement Wednesday. She added that she would comment further after she had had time to digest the news of her captor's imminent release.“

Elizabeth Smart says it’s ‘incomprehensible’ that one of her captors will go free years earlier than expected

She served her sentence. Horrible person but she did her time.

JMO, but her federal sentence and her state sentence are two different things and one should not have anything to do with the other. MOO

This is NOT right. I live in Utah, & will do what I can if there's any local protest. This just sucks. I see no reason to let her free, EVER.

I hope she has to register as a sex offender (even though not her directly but part of the crime)

Our prisons are full of non-violent drug offenders but we let actual predators out because of concurrent sentencing. She should have to serve the maximum given, totaling both federal and state.

I know - It doesn't make it any easier to stomach.

Living well is the best revenge. These two disgusting people didn't break Elizabeth. She didn't stoop to their level. They may have controlled her physical being for 9 months, but they never controlled her mind or spirit. She survived and she is living her dream. She is a wife, mother, and victim's advocate. She is surrounded by people who love her. Who is going to take Barzee in after she is released from prison? She will never be surrounded by the love Elizabeth is.

Woman Who Helped Kidnap Elizabeth Smart Will Be Freed Next Week: 'Incomprehensible,' Smart Says

The wife of the man who helped kidnap Elizabeth Smart from her bedroom 16 years ago will be released from custody on Sept. 19 after more than a decade behind bars, PEOPLE confirms.

Utah parole officials tell PEOPLE the move — which reverses a July denial of Wanda Barzee’s parole — came after “further review and advice from legal counsel” that showed they must credit Barzee’s time in federal prison toward her current term in state custody, on top of time she had already served in jail and a state hospital.

I certainly do not know how this works, WRT crediting federal time served to a sentence for time in a particular state, but I guess the matter is settled.

Is there no recourse for the State of Utah and the victim for this decision?
And is this what always happens WRT federal time served and state time served?
I would appreciate an attorney's comment on this, please, if possible. Thanks in advance. :)

Every once in a while I watch Elizabeth's speeches. The focus should always be about her strength. No one else matters.

Elizabeth Smart outraged 1 of her kidnappers to be freed

A woman convicted of helping a former street preacher kidnap Elizabeth Smart in 2002 will be freed from prison more than five years earlier than expected, a surprise decision that Smart called "incomprehensible" on Tuesday.

Wanda Barzee, 72, will be released Sept. 19 after the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole determined it had miscalculated the time she was required to serve in prison, board spokesman Greg Johnson said.

[...]

"It is incomprehensible how someone who has not cooperated with her mental health evaluations or risk assessments and someone who did not show up to her own parole hearing can be released into our community," Smart said.

Is the bbm part true? What on Earth is that board thinking?

Unfortunately that was up to the judge. The judge decided that they should be served concurrently. I don't know why nobody objected to that at the time. Though I'm pretty sure nobody wanted her released in 2024 either.

There is literally no option for keeping her incarcerated. She's served her time unless she commits another crime. In fact, since she's served her entire sentence and isn't being released early, she won't even be on probation.

The best hope is for her to be civilly committed by her family. Assuming she even qualifies. It really is scary to think of her being free. Though, I'm not sure she is much of a danger on her own, she seems quite weak minded alone. Hopefully she doesn't prove me wrong.
