Elizabeth Smart updates

Considering her mental state, the seriousness of Barzee's crime and the fact she has nowhere to go, if they really had to release her from prison I wish they'd transferred her to a mental hospital or group home for the mentally ill. JMO

'May we all remain vigilant’: Elizabeth Smart reacts to the release of Wanda Barzee, one of her kidnappers

After spending more than 15 years behind bars for her role in Elizabeth Smart’s kidnapping, Wanda Barzee is now free.

Her attorney said she intends to keep it that way. Barzee promised him that she would follow her federal probation — which includes seeking mental health treatment and staying away from the Smart family — and she said she hopes to be left alone.

[...]

“May we all remain vigilant in watching over our families, friends, and community from anyone who would seek to hurt or take advantage,” [Smart] wrote on Instagram. “I truly believe life is meant to be happy and beautiful, and no matter what happens that will remain my goal for me and for my family.”

[...]

As part of new conditions of her federal release, which were approved by a federal judge Wednesday, Barzee has agreed not to have any contact with any member of the Smart family, and she has agreed to not go to certain areas where the Smart family might be. She also has a 9 p.m. curfew, according to court documents and is expected to reside in an “emergency housing facility” until her probation officer approves another residence.

I am very concerned she will hook up with another nutbar......

Of course, she will. She's delusional and codependent. I'm pretty sure a creep already has set their sites on her as a future enabler/accomplice. She should register as a sex offender. Who helps a man kidnap a teen and watch him rape her. wth. gross.

That was part of her release conditions. She has to register as a sex offender

Her own family will have nothing to do with her. That says a lot to me. She may have fooled prison Social workers, probation officers, judges, psychologists, psychiatrists. But her family, and Elizabeth Smart know the monster inside this "Sweet Elderly Woman". Dangerous. Psychopath.

Woman who kidnapped Elizabeth Smart living near elementary school
December 31, 2018
"SALT LAKE CITY -- A woman who helped kidnap Elizabeth Smart is living several blocks from a Salt Lake City elementary school following her release from prison in September, according to Utah's sex-offender registry.

Wanda Barzee, 73, is listed in the registry as living in an apartment near the school after her initial placement in a halfway house. She was released on parole much earlier than anticipated, despite her refusal to co-operate with mental health professionals while incarcerated.

Federal probation officers did not return a telephone message Monday seeking comment about the living arrangement for Barzee near Parkview Elementary School."

It's Utah.
There is literally almost nowhere you can live that isn't "close" to children.

You can stand almost anywhere and look around and you will see a church, preschool inside a church, daycare, school, pediatricians office, park, playground, pool, recreation center, children's store or some other place where children congregate. These are ALL places she is restricted from going to.

There are only so many places where people that tend to be lower income, with a criminal record, that have to be a certain distance from children can reside. I'm impressed she found somewhere that was several blocks away quite frankly.

She is being supervised and unless she breaks another law she doesn't deserve to be harassed and reported on constantly. It's going to get into dicey territory if people aren't careful, the registry cannot be used to stalk or harass anyone... law enforcement will take that quite seriously believe it or not.

I know everyone hates the fact that she was released, I wish they could have committed her personally. However she did finish her entire sentence and should be left alone for now.

Unfortunately this was the plea agreement that was agreed to. I'm not sure why it was agreed to if everyone felt Wanda needed to be locked up for life. They could have convicted them both at trial. However, it was agreed to and you can't go back and change it now. So, make the best of it and trust the supervision to keep an eye on her.

Wanda is very lucky to have neighbors who are not going to add to the harassment it appears she is already facing. She lives 2500 feet from a school, that is 5 times further than required. I realize people would prefer she just be taken out and shot, but we live in America here.

The law used to be 1,000 feet and they had to change it because it was so unreasonable! There was nowhere for them to live and when they did find a place they were ALL living together. Seriously, she's doing far better than most other offenders.

Wanda isn't the one you need to worry about. It's the youth leader, neighbor, step family, uncle, friend of the family. If Wanda so much as tosses trash on the sidewalk she will be arrested. Just let her live what's left of her life and try to keep herself marginally sane. Driving her crazy won't help, she still won't be committed.

All of the uproar about this is really starting to annoy me. There are much better things the media could be focusing on! There are people without an income right now, people who need help right now, but the media is focusing on harassing her.

You need to worry about the people who are NOT on the registry, who's addresses are NOT public record. Seriously. This woman isn't out to rape your children. *pulls hair out*

Convicted kidnapper Barzee lives a legal distance from school; Smart says still too close

Neighbors 2News spoke with say they just learned on Tuesday morning that Elizabeth Smart's kidnapper lives next to them, something they are OK with.

"She's got to make it back in the world, right? As long as nothing goes on I'm OK with it,” said Todd Thompson.

Elizabeth Smart
What an outstanding woman, that words can't form as I choke up with emotion.
For everything that she has been thru, which would emotionally cripple the average person, yet she can stand and tell her story and continue to fight with such passion, Elizabeth I humbly bow, and somehow Meaghan Markle is important?

If she had come awake, startled, and reached out and smacked the guy up along side the head, would she be liable for anything?

Or perhaps reach out and punch him in the groin as hard as possible?

I swear, these creeps need instant negative consequences!

On Monday, Smart revealed she wanted to address a “very important and serious” matter on the first day of Black History Month. The 33-year-old shared a photo of herself on a missing person’s flyer.

“More than 64,000 missing black women and girls in the United States. Black women and girls make up more than 10% of the total missing population,” she captioned the post.

“For every black woman who reports sexual assault, at least 15 do not. 35% of black women experience sexual assault in their lifetime. 40-60% of black women report being coerced into sexual contact before they are 18! Personally, these facts are disgusting and disturbing to the extreme!”

Smart noted that her kidnapping received more attention than the cases of missing Black women. Learning about the lack of attention minorities receive in missing person cases prompted Smart to demand change and fair treatment for victims, no matter their skin color.

“As I have traveled and advocated, presented, met with survivors and victims, and heard their stories I know this: every person who is kidnapped, raped, or assaulted deserves attention, support, love, and justice,” she wrote.

“As human beings, I know we can do better, I know we have the capacity to see beyond skin color, ethnicity, economic status, or personal history. Nobody asks or deserves to be raped, nobody asks or deserves to be kidnapped, nobody asks or deserves to be hurt.”

JUN 3

SALT LAKE CITY — When Elizabeth Smart looks back over the past 20 years, she doesn’t dwell on her kidnapping.

“Life is hard, and it has its up and its downs, but I also think life can be very healing, and I feel like it has been for me,” she said.

And while some may still see her as the little 14-year-old girl plastered on missing posters, she doesn’t see herself that way.

“If someone sees me as the little girl that was kidnapped, it’s OK, that’s fine, because I know that yeah that is me, but that’s not all of me,” Smart said. “That was a moment in time, I have a whole lifetime of other experiences now.”
