Circumstances of Disappearance

Emin Önen, ten years old, says goodbye to his father and leaves his parents' house on May 16, 1993 to meet a friend. His little sister, who wants to bring Emin his bike, half an hour later, can't find him.
Witnesses confirm that Emin is going to his new friend: a 35-year-old man with a criminal record, whom the pastor is temporarily taking care of in the Protestant parish office. Emin wants to visit him and goes to the parish office about 700 meters away. But the boy is standing in front of a locked door.

In the evening, Emin is seen for the last time by two witnesses: They confirm that the ten-year-old was standing alone in the field in front of a group of trees on District Road 4, five kilometers from the parish office, between Kerpen-Buir and Kerpen-Manheim, around 8 p.m. - as if he were waiting for someone.
After that, all trace of Emin is lost.

The family looks for Emin everywhere: at the train station, in the hospital, at the church. Fields and playgrounds are searched. But Emin is nowhere. The police are also checking the friend, who has a criminal record, to see whether he could have had anything to do with the ten-year-old's disappearance. But this suspicion can never be confirmed. To this day, the police do not know what happened to the boy, whether he was possibly the victim of a capital crime or whether he was kidnapped.

Emin's family still believes that the boy is alive: they buy their old house, which they previously rented, and leave everything as it was on the day their child disappeared. After all, Emin should recognize everything when he comes back one day.

I wonder if this man still resides in Germany, whether he has been suspected of any crimes since 1993, and whether LE ever followed up years later with this man. Did he have a vehicle; was it checked for Emin's DNA? Did he own property? Was it searched with cadaver dogs? Was he tracked in the months following, to see whether he drove to any suspicious places? Sigh. We will never know the answers.

Emin's poor family.
