GUILTY Facebook leads police to kidnap suspect in Nevada

SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Police say they used social media to track a suspected kidnapper from the San Francisco Bay Area to a hotel-casino in northern Nevada where he was arrested on kidnapping, assault and pornography charges.

Nicholas Wessel, 37, of Richmond, California, allegedly persuaded two runaways from Modesto to travel to Nevada with him before he was arrested at the Nugget in Sparks about 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sparks police said.

He's accused of having non-consensual sex with a 14-year-old girl that Modesto police had found using a Facebook posting on the Internet.

Once there, Wessel rented a room and allegedly had non-consensual sex with one of the girls, a 14-year-old female, police said.

Additionally, police say they found several "illegal images of children" on Wessel's phone, some of the 14-year-old girl, but others were of unknown girls.

A California man who brought a 14-year-old girl from Richmond, Calif., to the Reno area with the intent that she engage in sexual activity, was sentenced on Nov. 13, 2014, to 10 years in prison and lifetime supervised, announced U.S. Attorney Daniel G. Bogden for the District of Nevada.

Nicholas Rider Wessel, 38, of Richmond, Calif., pleaded guilty in August to one count of transportation of a minor for illegal sexual activity and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Miranda M. Du. Judge Du denied Wessel’s request for release on bond pending a prison designation.
