just gorgeous,@PayrollNerd !!!

I switched from Olsen to the rectangular style. I can tear instead of cutting, much faster.

Since most fabric is 45" wide, the 9" rectangles and the 36" ties fit across the fabric nicely.

Found out today that my little sister's best friend has cancer -- will be sending some coordinated mask&hat sets out to her.
Oh what a neat idea to coordinate the hat and mask!! I made my sisters chemo caps and mine with McCalls pattern 4116, view G. I used batiks because they were different shades of the same color in the print. That way they’d coordinate with many outfits. My sister liked the one that was a variegated brown batik best because it was closest to her natural hair color. She’s a nurse in a clinic and she wanted her patients to feel comfortable seeing her.

I just cut a huge batch of the deaconess pattern so I could make masses. But when I finish them I might try these, which are still rectangular masks but also have a nose wire and a pocket, while also being adjustable.

I just watched a video on making the Olsen mask. They make it harder than it has to be, in my opinion. The ones I’m making are only 2 pieces, not 4 and they hold a filter too. I’m going to look at the rectangular ones to see if the design in my head will work.

Bias tape arrived and it’s much faster. Got the parts cut and pressed for 18 and got 3 of them made tonight. Tomorrow will be faster. Keep breaking needles tonight for some reason. Got requests for more so I’ll be busy.

I've made two. One based on this Face Masks for Covid-19 Relief and one like this
. DH prefers the first pattern so I will make him a bunch more. His job is deemed essential so he goes out Monday-Friday. The second pattern is nice too IMO so I may shorten the ear loops and keep it for myself.

This doesn’t surprise me. Once we have a vaccine or rapid test, then we can relax. I’ve been routinely isolating, and occasionally wearing masks for 3 years. It becomes a way of life. My family and friends all know not to plan anything with me too far in advance. You can’t predict the flu or a summer cold. Even a stomach bug or food poisoning could send me to an ER.

I think the best outcome of this whole mess, is everyone now realizes how hygiene isn’t a luxury. The habits formed now like hand washing, hand sanitizer, etc will become a natural part of life. Hopefully, more people will get flu shots, wear masks during a cold, isolate when sick, etc.

I dropped off 20 masks to the oncology nurse today. I had to pull up in valet and she came out covered in PPE head to toe. She was very grateful.

Ok, so I’ve got issues with both the Olson mask and the one Payrollnerd is doing, so I’ve redone both patterns to suit me. Prior to this, though, I delivered two Olson masks and 4 pleated masks to my brother and his family. He was amazed how well the Olson mask fit right over the nose and all that. He was just thrilled with these, honestly. My nephew is an electrician and he now has to wear a mask, too.

So I’m going to drop both new styles off and let the guys decide which one works better while doing physical labor, and then that’s the one I will continue with. Both now will have the nose wire, though. I’m using the plastic coated garden wire from the dollar store. It’s a gazillion yards for a buck and I always have 2 or 3 rolls around for gardening and other random stuff.

I’d love to see your designs! I’ve watched more videos of different styles. I have yet to see one that I feel fits as well as the style I’m making. I’m going to add a 3/4” x 3” channel just below the nose by stitching across horizontally. Then, wearers can insert a folded piece of aluminum foil or pipe cleaner. They can remove it before they wash it.

I went for treatment today. There were a lot of people wearing homemade masks. The cafe lady was rockin’ one with rhinestones. LOL! Everyone was remarking on mine. The way it fit, the style and the print. It’s the anchor print with 22” elastic. I also saw a few people with ill fitting masks that were the rectangular pleats but the strings were along the top and bottom, not on the sides. It made for very wide gaps at the cheeks and very little coverage of the nose.

Can you post a picture of the inside of this mask. Maybe you’re working with a different pattern than I thought. Where did you get yours?

I’ll get some pics of the channel inside mine. And I’ll try to get pics of my new pattern next to the old ones.

And what kind of cord are you using?

I am using the craft passion version. The comments on the instructions provide a multitude of ideas too. When I first found her pattern, they’re were a couple 100 comments. Now there are nearly a 1000. She updated the instructions and you can download the pattern to a PDF.

I found a bunch of bias tape in my stash. The single fold package I literally fold in half, stitch and cut into 3 equals pieces (about 48” each). The double fold bias tape I iron flat which makes it 2” wide. I cut it in half making 2 strips 1” wide. Then I fold 3 times and stitch. I get 6 ties per pkg. I tried to do a close up. One day I made ties in all colors I had. Then I picked coordinating prints for the masks.

My bias tape arrived so I have been blasting through masks. Probably should step back and try to work the wire in or the pocket but I’m trying to get my requested ones out. Want to get prototype A out as soon as possible so people have them as a start, I think. Sewing machine and I are disagreeing, took it apart last night and put it back together, seemed to help. Feed dogs don’t seem to be feeding at same rate or it could have been the rum and pineapple juice. I hate to say it but I prefer the feel of the cotton ties. My bias tape maker is the wrong size so that’s not going to work. Will end up with 1/4” wide tape if I use it. Just need to order the kit on Amazon but I’m sure by the time it arrives I wouldn’t need it. I don’t use bias tape in my quilting. I’ve also learned despite having a 9 month old puppy if I have time to make masks I have time to quilt so I’m looking forward to that again.

Thoughts on block scraps for masks? Too bulky? I could sew a few together to get the right size. Seams are hidden so no large openings. I have a tote of scrap blocks and for the masks I’m giving to health care workers I’m trying to keep my costs low. On the other hand if they won’t work (haven’t come up with reason why they wouldn’t yet) I won’t bother and I’ll use my less attractive fabrics.

I think the pieced front would work. The only concern would be if your threading a filter inside would it get caught up in the seams. Or, you could use sew in interfacing as your permanent filter/batting. Quilt the front, interfacing and back together. That seems like the pleats would be bulky but maybe not.

I am keeping my costs at zero. I have plenty of fabric and when the bias tape runs out, I’ll just cut 1.5” strips for the ties and fold the edges in so they don't ravel. If I don't have an exact thread to match, I pick a coordinating color that I do have.

I’ve spent at least $80.
