Facial Masks - Coronavirus

The issue is, there really is a need for different types of masks, depending on the person and the need.

1. My husband, age 80, with COPD. He needs a "real" mask, that will be protective when he is out. And still trying to figure out how to manage the oxygen cannula with a mask.

2. My son, age 29, driving a truck around the country. He needs a mask for some areas that have mandatory mask wearing directives. Just a face covering. He hates masks. And has a beard.

3. My daughter, age 26, who has to wear a mask 8 hours a day during her shift at work. She doesn't want one too hot. She hates the current paper ones.

So, Mickey is making masks this week. My sewing machine has a part missing, I never bothered to get it fixed. So, it will be serger only. Should be interesting. Last sewing I did was Halloween costumes.
Yes. And the frustrating part about making them is when you cannot have close contact with them to get it to fit properly.

I agree. Making a mask comfortable for the wearer increases the chance they’ll wear it. Here in SWFL, we will roast this summer wearing masks, even in the A/C. Fitting them based on face shape is tough. I’ve been sticking with the Ladies size because that’s what most people need. The Men’s was too big, teen and kids sizes aren’t needed at the moment.

My machine was acting up last week. Pulled out the dust bunnies and it’s better, not perfect but it’s not like I can get it tuned up. I still have my grandmothers Singer sewing machine. It only goes forward and backward. That’s about 99% of what I do anyway. I will pull it out if need be.

I enjoy living history, and was seriously geared up during the sesquicentennials in my area & of the US Civil War.

Lots of 100% cotton remnants, short lengths, scraps in my sewing room. No Scooby Doo, though!

This pandemic is not having any effect on the stashed wools, silks, and linens.

I have had to think through all of these situations.

I'd suggest a gaiter for #2 --- for #3 depending on her potential exposure or if it's more for 'show' to not make other people mad (and a blue paper towel could be cut to fit and put in a slit you have to make and sew the sides or sew back together... MOST headbands are not wide enough. As soon as I find some wide enough, other people do too and they sell out or jack up the prices. :/ Which isn't too bad since they have another purpose later.

For #1, some form of this may help. Can he get oxygen masks instead of a cannula?

If you're fitting for children (IDK if this really would work for large men, maybe worth a try) Have the parents trace their splayed hands (like they're making a turkey) put the names on the paper and leave in the mailbox or under the doormat

Can't edit... sounds like the cloth version of this? Which looks like maybe a Korean (disposable) medical mask? KF94 Mask - Medical Mask with Comfortable Non-Woven Fabric

Watching youtubes for patterns

This one maybe?
OMG! Thank you for This! I did it! I accurately replicated the professionally made mask on my first try! That's amazing because I really am not a seamstress. Every once in awhile I produce something nice. But I do not have a natural talent for sewing.

I will try to find a way to post pictures.

Let's see if this works.

Here it is next to the professional one (bottom pic is professionally produced one - it needs to be pressed - I use it a lot).

It looks great! I looked at part of the video and no way could I do this with my basic hand sewing "skills." :p It looks pretty complicated to me... Maybe I should send a link to the video to someone who actually knows how to sew and ask them if they could replicate it.

You did a great job! Is this the one your family likes best?

My family does not know about this one yet, as I only discovered the pattern today.

Unless I get really good at making these, I won’t be telling them I can do this.

That said, I really would like to see if I could get one made for each because they really are superior to anything else I’ve tried.

Scooby is really cute. The flamingoes too. I focused on sewing light ones yesterday and mostly blue ones today. Planning a bit better means less changing out the thread. Just about out of bias tape but no biggie, lots of fabric loitering around here.

The ear savers are great. The simple behind the neck one is the best, I think. It’s certainly better than using a paper clip as many nurses are currently doing. I will probably make some for myself, too, for when I go back to work.

On Facebook, in the group a man put straps on his mask, and used velcro for fastening.

Here are 3 different styles I did before finding the perfect pattern today. I'm hoping I have enough of that pink fabric left to make myself a mask. I gave that one to a good friend who is a nurse.
