You can search Olson mask on YouTube for a tutorial. I have tweaked the pattern a bit to make sure it fits everyone. And I also added a top stitch around the top and bottom of the mask so it holds its shape better when washed. Some people are also adding a bit of interfacing as a filter and to hold its shape.
This great and cool! Thanks for innovating. I will make one but im thinking where to get filter, hehehe. Putting face mask would be already an in-thing even if we surpass this Covid 19.

Blue shop towels make a great filter.

It was interesting, that in Las Vegas, as soon as "Social Distancing" was put in place, the very first people who were wearing masks, like it was perfectly normal, were Asians.

I wondered if it was a cultural thing. Maybe this is the norm in China.

From what I understand, it is the norm, mostly due to pollution. That’s why they are experts at making masks.

I just finished one of the Olson masks and I found it pretty easy, even though it's six parts. It's also the best looking one I've made. I hadn't done any sewing recently so maybe I was just rusty.

I used 22” of elastic, all one piece tied in a knot so it’s adjustable. Good quality elastic won’t stretch out for a very long time as in years. Not sure if I posted the photo as it was worn but yes it keeps it off the ears. It also allows it to hang at your neck instead of removing it. I’ve heard the nurses talking about the ear elastic hurting their ears and of them falling off when they lean over. The ones with the continuous tie has the same benefits. I’ve washed both types with great success, ironed them dry to sterilize them.

This^^^^.

This is the second time I've heard about ear elastic hurting ears.

I'm going to do the same thing when adding elastic to my masks.

Congrats! It feels good to do one really well.

Scooby is really cute. The flamingoes too. I focused on sewing light ones yesterday and mostly blue ones today. Planning a bit better means less changing out the thread. Just about out of bias tape but no biggie, lots of fabric loitering around here.

I like the dots!

Chief nurse designs a mask | University Health System

Here’s our chief nurse’s design for a mask that blocks more than 99% of airborne particles
April 20, 2020
Update: We have received numerous calls and emails from people around the country who want to see instructions for making the N95 replacement mask designed by University Health System’s chief nurse executive Tommye Austin.

We are sharing this design with the understanding it should only be used for non-commercial purposes, and we cannot guarantee that others using this design will have a mask as effective as the one created by Austin. Here’s how she sourced special materials, developed her design and verified her mask’s effectiveness.

Today was treatment day. I took in about 30 masks made between me and my friend. My friend made a bunch of rectangular ones. They were not near as popular as the ones with the single piece of tie or the single piece of elastic. They kept saying how they loved that they wouldn’t hurt their ears. My assigned nurse choose a Scooby and a musical print. They all starting singing the Scooby songs which was hilarious.

They need more “manly” ones (their word, not mine). I dug thru my stash and found over a yard of medium blue solid. I also have cotton curtains that are in great shape.

I did go online to see if maybe there was some inexpensive medical print fabric but the prices were ridiculous. $5 for a “fat quarter“ and over $5 for shipping that would only make 3 masks. A yard was $22-$24 and it wasn’t anything more special than you’d find at Walmart. I’ll stick with my zero dollar plan.

I wore the flamingos today with a hot pink shirt. LOL! I got lots of compliments. My daughter wore the rectangular cat print today. Here is a pic of the ones my friend made and a pic of the ones I made.

I dropped off my first batch of masks at Joann's today. They were most appreciative, which always makes one feel good.

My daughter is wearing a cotton mask 8-10 hours a day, and breaking out terribly. All around her mouth, chin, cheeks.

Any thoughts?

Has the fabric been washed? If so, it’s probably chafing. Have her put a very thin layer of antibiotic cream or steroid ointment on first. Let it absorb in then put on the mask. If it’s not a 100% cotton fabric mask, she may be allergic to what it is made from.

I wash our masks in unscented liquid laundry detergent and iron them dry. This sterilizes them and the oil in the dryer sheet doesn’t get on them.

My youngest has had severe skin issues from 5 months old, and we’ve dealt with the same thing. So many dermatology appointment, different ointments, lotions, etc. A lot of hers is now controlled by diet because the underlying issue was severe food allergies. (She’s now 22)
