My daughter is wearing a cotton mask 8-10 hours a day, and breaking out terribly. All around her mouth, chin, cheeks.

Any thoughts?
I would first look at the laundry soap. My specialist recommends All Free and Clear and no fabric softener or dryer sheets.

If that doesn't do it, she may need dye-free organic cotton.

@PayrollNerd and @JaneEyre thank you both. Not sure what the problem is...I let her know both of your suggestions.

Her skin has always had issues.

Balmex, (zinc diaper cream not ointment) but try on an area not already inflamed first (With anything you try) Don't want to add to the issue.

ETA: All Free and Clear laundry detergent is a good one I've used. IDK about other brands, but possibly dyes/fragrances and use a little less detergent than called for b/c a residue is left behind (any brand)

Has she tried using one lined with tee-shirt material?

I've used both quilting weight cottons and tee-shirt fabric. I prefer wearing the tee-shirt next to my skin?

Not searching for a link, but at least one study found tee-shirt fabric to be as effective as woven cotton.

Maybe adjustable ties would help?

Agree with the laundry recommendations.

This is hard enough, without adding a rash!

If we all put pantyhose on our heads, bank robbers will have a very easy time blending in. LOL.
This idea is cracking me up!

That may be the only way to get people to not touch their mask then touch their face or wad their mask up and put it in their purse/pocket with absolutely no idea which is front or back; not that it matters because if they haven't folded dirty onto dirty every time, everything that's touched the front of the mask is possibly contaminated. Then there's a whole other issue of contaminated hair. Just saying, a little rant after making a very infrequent trip out recently. Most of the people I saw are better off without a mask. At least they're protecting us, kind of.

Gee, could she say that company name any more?! I can see how it’s quicker, if you have a serger. I don’t. The one piece tie is definitely what the nurses rave about. The sides gathering up and providing a close fit too.

I saw a lot of shoppers with face coverings at the store today. I didn’t see many employees with them nor the stock people.

I am working on my guy themed masks for Thursday. Finished 3 with an Army print and 3 with a batik fish print. Tomorrow I’ll do 3 mottled brown and 3 navy with white dots and 3 NASCAR print.

Hmm. I just found I had nautical chart fabric. You reminded me, I think I have some batik fish, too. Haven't been into bins of fabric for some time. Hoping to be able to soon.

I think it can be done a little easier than that video and definitely without a serger. If it were done a bit differently, the fabrics to the sides could also be used for masks.

I think this is going to be the one I try, now just deciding whether to handsew or try to lug my machine out and clean it up and hope it works... I may need the trundle repaired :-)

The guys around here would like anything fishing or nautical related - I’m going to search around for fabric.

Ha, ha!

Perfect laugh for the day! Thanks.

Do you think that masks have reached a 'saturation point' where most people that have one if they want one. (Maybe not multiples or fancy ones, but a bare minimum?)

Today was treatment day. I took in about 30 masks made between me and my friend. My friend made a bunch of rectangular ones. They were not near as popular as the ones with the single piece of tie or the single piece of elastic. They kept saying how they loved that they wouldn’t hurt their ears. My assigned nurse choose a Scooby and a musical print. They all starting singing the Scooby songs which was hilarious.

They need more “manly” ones (their word, not mine). I dug thru my stash and found over a yard of medium blue solid. I also have cotton curtains that are in great shape.

I did go online to see if maybe there was some inexpensive medical print fabric but the prices were ridiculous. $5 for a “fat quarter“ and over $5 for shipping that would only make 3 masks. A yard was $22-$24 and it wasn’t anything more special than you’d find at Walmart. I’ll stick with my zero dollar plan.

I wore the flamingos today with a hot pink shirt. LOL! I got lots of compliments. My daughter wore the rectangular cat print today. Here is a pic of the ones my friend made and a pic of the ones I made.

I can send you what I have of the nautical/fish fabric - will try to look for more tomorrow. There's no telling what I have and I don't see myself using much of it any time soon.

IF you are not allergic to cats... I keep my fabric in plastic tubs, but that's not airtight and anyone with cats know you can't set something down without cats wanting to see what you're up to.

ETA: we are trying to slowly downsize... (trying) :-)

I don’t think so for individuals. I had a friend in AZ ask me to send her some. The place she ordered from, never sent them!!!

Oh I’m definitely allergic to cats!! Along with nearly everything else. Grass, trees, food, etc.

ETA: I donated a bunch of fabric to the local sewing guild that was hosting a sewing camp for kids. They were very appreciative!

Some of these tiny kids sewing masks are amazing!

I'm allergic to 'outside' stuff, too... something is giving me fits this last week especially. :-(

Ok next batch, more “manly” fabrics by request. I thought the batik fish would look more masculine but it really doesn’t. I found a batik brown in my stash. I think I like the Army ones the best!
