The blue-green one was my first effort and just a single layer. The pink and black one was a much better job. Both people loved both masks, though, even though I felt weird about them (since I'm usually trying to give people the most protection possible, and these are not that). They went from being completely upset about the masks all the time to loving them. We'll see what happens when #3 gets hers in the mail. She is both asthmatic and claustrophobic.

That did not do right. Here's the pink one. There's a channel on the sides for elastic to go in.

Ok so the knit chemo caps that I made for my sister are probably the same material. I made 2 knit ones for her to sleep in and 2 batik ones to wear at work. She loved them. I’ll dig for that left over fabric and see if I have enough remnants. Thanks for the tips! At least they’re wearing a mask!!

Probably. It’s super stretchy and I was making the head-band/cowl/scarf/head-wrap thingamajigs with it. So it was fabric that could stretch into all that in one piece and was lightweight.

Well, it took a long time to actually get this Smile Mask together. The hardest part was the mouth piece. Not because it is hard but because it is slick. It called for vinyl and I can see why. By the time I figured out how to do the clear piece, I had smudged it up so bad, I cut a new piece.

I ended up using a piece of a clear (new) shower curtain liner. It is vinyl but thin. (The paper protectors were too flimsy.) I had to cut a piece bigger than what is needed, tape it to my cutting mat and then size it to 3” x 4 1/2”.

I could not find my double sided zipper tape. I had to stitch the plastic in place. The plastic had to be on the bottom for the feed on my sewing machine to work. Fabric on top, plastic on bottom. I stitched it using white thread so it blended well.

The side channels were so small that it was too thick or bulky to sew. I had to bring them in further to reduce the bulk.

Overall I think it’s a great design. It just needed a bit more width to ensure the channels are easily sewn.

I measured the pattern and wrote the measurements in inches.

Looks good!

No. It’s just a completely different type of fabric used in a pleated mask with super soft adjustable elastic. I am using fabric left over from when my sis had cancer and I was making her head wraps. I can’t tell you exactly what the material is because my mom bought it. But it is a knit that is somewhat silky. Anyway, it’s extremely breathable, not great protection, but certainly better than a bandana. It feels less confining than most, and the silky softness makes a huge difference to people who are getting anxiety.

Thanks for sharing this info. I can see why people would be comforted with softer fabric.

This method may be an alternative to using the softer fabric for claustrophobia / asthma. Next post is the one I find more interesting.

This could be done with most of the 'fitted' type masks (a bit of room needs to be added to front of the pattern to account for the extra seam and zip tie.

Right. Space is good, too. That's why I sent two different kinds of masks to these people. I'm attaching pics of the cotton one here. As you can see, it has lots of space when opened. Also, there's a filter pocket and a removable nose wire (in case they find it uncomfortable- they can remove it).

What is the measurement on this one? 7” x 11”?

8 1/2 x 15 1/2 folded in half. It’s basically the pattern from this video, although I may do my ends a tad differently and I add a removable nose wire pocket as well.

Incidentally, this is basically what I did with the knit one, except I skipped the pocket and just sewed it together at the top.

I like the channels on the ends of this one. I can thread the ties thru them.

Yes! I’ve been giving people both ties and elastic in some cases so they can decide.

Royal Oak tree sprouts free masks for neighbors

Need a mask, take a mask.

That's why Karen Sayles in March began making the face coverings and hanging them on a tree in front of her home in Royal Oak.

Already a quilter, she had almost everything she needed except a pattern for the masks and elastic. She found the patterns online and she devised a way to make the ties from the same material as the masks or in different colors.

"I can sew, and why not use this talent to help my neighbors,” she said.

Now she's on a mission to help her neighbors stay safe during the pandemic with the free masks...

Such a heartwarming story :) I'm going to post this on News That Makes You Smile forum, too.

Gross.

Ukrainian woman uses underwear as face mask after service denied at post office: report

Snips:
A Ukrainian woman has gone viral for removing her panties and wearing them as a face mask after being refused service at a post office, according to a report.

When told that she would not be provided service without a required mask, the flustered woman removed her pants in front of stunned customers -- then took off her white panties and placed them over her face.

I started making headbands to deal with my COVID hair. This morning I decided I may as well add buttons. It works! You can see in one picture how much I've got going on behind my ears. I have a small face and ears so having hearing aids, glasses, and a mask hanging around behind my ears is uncomfortable. This helps.
