Facial Masks - Coronavirus

I started making headbands to deal with my COVID hair. This morning I decided I may as well add buttons. It works! You can see in one picture how much I've got going on behind my ears. I have a small face and ears so having hearing aids, glasses, and a mask hanging around behind my ears is uncomfortable. This helps.

Interesting. I am going to get hearing aids soon and had not even thought about how they might affect my mask wearing. I also wear glasses (but have short hair). Currently I have a couple of cloth masks I don't really like because they fit too closely over my nose and mouth. They have ties, not elastic. They get soggy with wearing.

You need better masks!

It’s possible that other people don’t have the same issues I do. I think my brother could probably wear hearing aids, sun glasses, and a summer hat with no problems. But for me, it causes a lot of discomfort - the addition of a hat. I also cannot wear headbands over the ears - painful.

The masks arrived. Lots of numbers and such on the pkg. I wasn’t able to determine if they were FDA approved earlier. I will look up the new info and see if I can find anything. If they are not, I guess they’re better than not wearing a mask.

Ok, I've gotten a little obsessive with the headbands.

Are these geared toward women or are men finding them useful too ?

I know a guy whose wife sewed buttons onto his baseball style cap :)
The headbands are great though I see lots wearing them.

It’s no wonder people are confused, belligerent about masks. Maybe it is related to the audience of each org.

WHO guidance: Healthy people should wear masks only when 'taking care of' coronavirus patients

The World Health Organization is recommending healthy people, including those who don't exhibit COVID-19 symptoms, only wear masks when taking care of someone infected with the contagion, a sharp contrast from the advice given by American public health officials who recommend everyone wear a mask in public.

I don't see it hurts to wear a mask, except the percent of people that aren't wearing them correctly. What hurts people is the arguing and anger over the issue. I wish everyone would have more compassion for all the nuances related to the issue. You have people looking for masks for infants!
I agree, it’s a lack of knowledge. Adults don’t want to take the time to learn the science behind it all.

Kids 2 and under can’t wear a mask. When my youngest was an infant, I bought a mosquito netting that covered her stroller. People looked at me like I was being mean?! Too many people were trying to touch her. She has skin issues and asthma. She was always sick with something. Now we know why of course but 22 years ago, we struggled to keep her healthy.

it would be easier to believe anything if the advice, the "science," and the data did not change multiple times a day. I read a lot and the experts do not agree. I have actually never seen a scientific issue with so much disagreement- even with something like climate change, there are two sides more or less and you know what they espouse. with this disease, there are new theories every day- about everything- time on surfaces, transmission, risk, therapies, etc.

But isn’t this advice from the WHO based on a very, very old study? I read that it in the other thread.

When two scientific entities disagree, I’m going to go with the one that matches common sense. In this case, it’s that masks help.

I see Joann's still has their "Make to Give" page up, complete with links to mask patterns.

I think home-made masks will be needed through this year, and possibly into next year. This is because we may not have peaked yet, and there is no safe vaccine available.

Thoughts?

I think the WHO has a wider audience and has been advising on masks for years. If masks weren’t helpful, they would have long since stopped promoting them during epidemics. Other countries have worn them for years. So not sure why the discrepancies now. If this virus originated by jumping species like the bird flu and other SARS type viruses then why so much controversy now?

My cousin Daniel has been in the virus industry so to speak for decades. You can look him up and hear his interviews on YouTube. His mother, my aunt, is always sending us links to whatever he is advising on.

Now, wearing masks 8 hours a day at work. Well, no one needs to bother with makeup any longer.

At first, my face was chafing, even with the softest masks. I am putting on a heavy dose of face cream now, and also when I get home.

I prefer the masks with one strap, that can be tied, rather than the elastic behind the ears.

Just my opinion from the field of mask wearing, 40 hours a week.

I agree the masks will be needed for at least another year. I went to JoAnns here in SWFL 2 weeks ago. They literally have no fabric. I got the last yard of white cotton. Someone told me they’re switching fabric sources and it happened to coincide with the virus. They can’t get fabric fast enough.

Now that the country is essentially open for business, I suspect we will see an even greater need. I cut out 10 more masks today. I’ve been busy and was only able to get 5 made in the last week.

I’ve had good results with aquafor and Vaseline when my skin gets dry and irritated. After I shower and put on my usual face moisturizer at night, I’ll put a thin layer of aquafor or Vaseline to seal in the moisturizer. It feels kind of gross at first, but eventually I got used to it.

Joann had a sale on solids a week or so ago but were sold out of most of it online, too. This explains it.

By the way, I'm going to avoid white lining for women's masks in the future because of makeup stains. Going to use beige until it runs out. Too bad I didn't think of that before.

My friend made the cutest watermelon print masks!! And the blue sparkle and red dot are cute too. My youngest stole the cat print from the pile. LOL!

The green, pink dot and purple swirls are the 5 I made.

That is the same feedback the waitresses were saying to me. My friend’s 2 daughters are waitresses. They asked for double sided masks. That was their term for the type mask I make. If I can, I use 2 different coordinating prints. They flip them around so their makeup stains aren’t always on the same side. This horse themed one is in my ready to stitch pile.
