Good idea. I got some beautiful cat fabric that I'm having to place the pattern on strategically to get the cats on the mask. It may cause some waste, but people really want masks in the red one in particular. Granny would not approve of waste...

Love the cat fabric!

I also purchased chiffon, based on that second article. It arrived the other day and I cannot comprehend how it could do any good at all. So now I have a yard of very pretty pale pink chiffon that I’m also guessing I would destroy in any attempt to sew it.

The silk I can understand.

I have two masks I bought on Etsy that use chiffon as a middle layer between two cotton layers of beautiful batik fabric. They are lovely and well made but are hot to wear here in hot, humid NC. I'll get a lot more use out of them in cooler weather. I have been using the surgical masks mostly this summer, and my face still gets sweaty.

Love the fabric everyone is using!

I've generally used two layers of cotton, and then added a pocket for a filter; I'll probably keep that mask recipe for now.

At any rate, I'll share photos of some that I've finished.

Okay, here are the latest mask photos:

We are giving the ones below to our vet:

Lastly, chocolate and strawberries.

Love the dog fabric.

So cute! Holiday-themed masks would be fun: pumpkin pie, ribbon candy, candy canes, Christmas cookies.

Question! I ordered 100% cotton fabric. It came still in the packaging which says 100% cotton, yet it feels almost like satin. I don’t trust it. Have any of you ever seen 100% cotton fabric that feels like that?

Where was the fabric made? Can you tell if it’s a US mill that you could search online for? I’d pull a thread out and see if you can tell the texture in anymore detail.

I think I got bamboozled.

At least all my other fabric purchases have been as expected.

Finished 24 masks with the Smiles pattern. They go together very quick. My thread kept breaking and I don’t know why. Now moving on to delivery.

One local niece starting high school. One niece starting a new job in Utah. One local friend who’s twin was just diagnosed with lung cancer. The Boston Red Socks print is definitely the most popular.

You are truly an amazingly gifted and talented woman. Your generosity, kiindness, thoughtfulness, and perseverance are inspirational. I admire your courage and energy despite your illness. You are in my prayers daily.

I like those purple and blue ones in the second picture.

A lab from a university about fiber testing. More tests then most people would need:

We're not looking for wool, but this one is a great test for thrift store yarns:

https://www.thewoolstudio.com/bleach-test

@JaneEyre, that burn test should tell you what need to know. Synthetic melts into a lump, cotton burns to pretty ashes.

You'll also be able to melt many synthetics with an iron set for Cotton. But -- you'll need to get the re-hardened synthetic off of your iron. (Don't ask me how I know. )

Please don't breath the fumes from burning or melting synthetics, either!

I've managed to make two masks with silk pockets. I'm going to test them this week at work. I'm hoping they help prevent mask acne. I will know by Saturday if they do.

(These are my blue cats.)

As for the faux cotton, I'm pretty sure without setting it on fire that it's not cotton. I may set it on fire anyway, though. It's my mood this week.

I have a bunch of cat fabric to make a quilt that is similar to your cat print. I bet it’s the same fabric line.

Seriously, you’ll probably feel better if you torch that crap. Then write a poor review!

I bought some adhesive nose strips and they are working great. I slip it inside the mask through the filter pocket opening and stick it in place.

A couple of questions about cleaning/washing your masks. How often do you wash your cloth mask? Do you wash by hand or in the washer? If you use procedural masks, do you reuse them or use a new one each time you need to wear a mask?
RSBM.
I wash ours after every use. I collect them in a mesh laundry bag all week then on laundry day I close the bag and drop it in the washer. I add Lysol laundry additive to that load. I hang them to dry and iron some of them- depends on the fabric. Some wrinkle more than others.

Surgical/procedure masks I don't re-use.

These are currently the bane of my existence because I can no longer find the heavy duty ones without the adhesive, and my masks have channel pockets because I want to be able to remove them.

Are you hand washing your masks? Things don't always turn out well when these things go through the machine.

Never mind. I see in next post you machine wash.
