It's really hot and humid here today. We went to get groceries and were warm even inside the store, so I put both of our cloth masks into my lingerie bag and tossed it in with a load of towels. As long as they don't shrink, I will keep them clean with thorough washing/drying.

It was hot here today too. By the end of running errands, I was hot and tired of wearing a mask. I took my friend to a nice quilt shop she’d never been too. She loved it. They had a pretty good selection of fabrics. Then we went to JoAnns Fabric. They haven’t had much fabric in a long time and they still don’t.

I have 2 baby boy quilts to do. I did find a nice red print for the squares at the quilt shop. At JoAnns I found flannel train print for the backing. Those are the only 2 pieces I had to buy. All the other fabric was donated to me.

Experiment with silk-lined masks - by Friday I usually have new mask acne. Not this week.

Congrats on finding a solution & sharing, @JaneEyre!!!

Wonder if I can find a silk blouse at a thrift store?

I’ve got to get trucking on making more for myself. The problem is, it is really difficult like you said. Cutting it is a nightmare. Sewing it is a nightmare. I’m sure that folks with more experience and all the right tools can truck along with it. I mean, there are tons of silk masks for sale on Etsy. I am not Etsy-level. And as long as I’m capable of doing this (eventually), I won’t buy. But I’ve only got two now, and I hand wash after wearing. It takes longer to dry hand washed items.

Quoting myself just to say that masks turned out fine with no shrinkage. From now on, I will put them in lingerie bag so ear loops don't get tangled on agitator, machine wash and dry.

Heard on local news yesterday that the State of Michigan is sending 400K masks to seniors. If we don't receive them, we will probably purchase at least one more cloth mask for each of us. I have a feeling that we will need masks in public venues for a long time :(

Mask making this week has been quicker due to using an easier pattern and ear elastics. I was finally able to get 1/4” elastic so I don’t need to make the ties.

I believe we will all be wearing masks for quite some time also. I just don’t see how we can avoid it. Vaccine safety takes months, possibly a year or two to perfect.

Oh, I wish I’d known you were in need of elastic. I have quite a lot I could have shared with you.

I put aside the baby quilt prep and made a matching chemo cap and mask. My friends twin was just diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.

Beautiful. I’m sorry to hear about your friend’s twin.

Some good tips...

Foggy glasses, 'maskne' fixed with these simple tips
Snips:
To prevent “maskne,” Jaber recommends washing the face twice daily, with whatever cleanser works best for your skin type and following with a moisturizer around the areas where the mask usually irritates the skin.

Glasses fog because humidity can escape the mask and move upward, coming into contact with the lenses and causing them to fog. Placing a tissue under the top of your face mask can also help absorb some of the droplets, leading to clear lenses. Wearing a mask that can form to the bridge of your nose — one with wire, for instance — can help prevent the warm air from your mouth from reaching your lenses.

I do this anyway because my nurse friend told me to shower immediately when I get home because of how reckless my coworkers can be. And of course, I wash my face in the morning, too. The silk really is helping. I’m slowly working on duplicating all of my masks in silk.

I finished 3 sets of matching chemo caps and masks. I think they’re pretty and I hope the patient likes them. I want to keep one set just in case someone else pops up on my radar. I will have my friend pick the 2 she thinks her Twinsess will like.

Very nice ^ I really like the fabric choices in the first pic.

I finally broke down and ordered a new straight stitch presser foot and straight stitch presser foot plate to help me sew silk. $50+

Next bit I save I’m getting a new iron because mine no longer holds water for steam. Then a decent light to sew by. Then maybe a felt pad for ironing. I’m tired of the grid lines from my ironing board showing through onto fabric when I iron it.

I’d recommend the sewing light I have. I bought it at JoAnn Fabrics a few years back. My coupon was 40%? It was a $99 light/fan. When I’m doing close up hand stitches, I can take it to the living room and get comfy. I didn’t think I’d use the fan at all but when I get warm, it really helps.

I finished a couple knit sleeping caps today for my friend’s twin. I bought off white, pink and light blue knit fabric. I was thrilled it was on sale for $4.38 for 1/2 a yard which makes 2 caps! It is a bit tricky to cut out and I don’t have a serger either. I found a nice stitch on my machine that seems good for knit.

My niece in Utah loves her Cubs mask. She’s so cute! (Trying to protect her identity.)

Don’t argue with anti-mask shoppers, CDC guides retail employees

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a warning about a new coronavirus health risk you probably didn’t expect: getting slapped, choked or kicked in the workplace by angry customers. And the best way to avoid it is not to engage.

The health agency issued guidance this week for retail and service workers suggesting ways consumer-facing companies can limit violence toward workers that may occur when businesses implement policies to stop the spread of the virus...

I made matching sewing scissor masks for my sister, mom, and me. And I made this adorable sleepy critter mask for a friend's kid. I've been going a little wild ordering fabric.
