Family, under pressure, removes its hanged dummy

If this was put up in March, maybe I could see this being a racial statement. It's October and people decorate for Halloween!

I can't even believe people are saying it's because the dummy is wearing a black sweatshirt. Give me a break.

I also sort of stand by my Mason-Dixon line comment. I think what I said was misconstrued. Obviously if you see a noose hanging in a tree down in Louisiana(even if it's a Halloween decoration) it's going to have racial overtones. I just don't think it has the same implications up in New Jersey. I agree that racism knows no state lines but I do believe it's more prevalent in the South, even if that belief is right or wrong. That's just my perception.

I don't think it should be banned... My reasoning is that I like to know who I am dealing with..
Either they are racist or they are just stupid ... either way not someone I would want to befriend..

From the article I read no one had a tantrum they simply called LE.

Sorry...when I was describing the tantrum I was talking about the people who didn't want to take down the dummy.

I am going to agree with you on this..
In Florida there were places still segregated into the mid-80's. I am totally sure that other southern places were the same.
Not legally segregated but the wall between the "white part of the bar" and the black was not taken down.

In my opinion, Americans are getting ready to lose what we've (our troops) have fought so hard to obtain. Not that I think this is right or wrong, personally I think it's just a Halloween decoration but look at it in the grand scope of things. The American flag being called offensive in schools, religion being offensive, One nation under God is offensive, certain hair cuts are offensive etc. etc.
If things keep going the way they are, what freedoms will we, as Americans have anymore?

And the point about Black History month is dead on. There is no NAAWP or White Entertainment TV or scholarships for white children etc.
I'm not racist in the least but it seems like the white race is becoming the minority. This also goes for police in high immigrant areas being required to take Spanish classes. WTF? Isn't this America where the most recognized language is English?

Some may think it was a worthwhile tantrum. Our rights to free speech are being withered away each passing day for a multitude of reasons. Remember, these are people who have put up this decoration for years without a single complaint, and now in the blink of an eye they're being told they cannot do something they are accostomed to. Imagine if a right that you enjoyed was suddenly taken away. I would hope that you would put up a fight in the same way. We shouldn't let our rights be stripped of us without question.

I personally would still think it is tacky and gross, b/c my reaction isn't racial. I'm just a white girl from the 'burbs who hates gory stuff like that.

This is my point. I love the gory stuff. It's all just a matter of opinion.

No actually Americans mostly speak Spanish. 52% based on recent calculations.. But of course that is all those immigrants.
I have total issue with "the white race is becoming the minority."
Does the White race need to be majority?? How about everyone just be human?? No need to worry about race..
Does it matter what "race" is more abundant?

Does the White race need to be majority?? Nope
How about everyone just be human?? Agreed!!!
No need to worry about race..
Does it matter what "race" is more abundant? Absolutely not. So long as you are a law-abiding American citizen (read: here legally), that's all that matters.

I agree! I guess I just worded it wrong. Basically there is NO minority race anymore. That's my point. So why is the BET, NAACP etc?

I pick my battles. Some things are worth fighting for. A Halloween decoration does not even make the list.

I would not even begin to call this a free speech issue. If I found out I had done something, even inadvertently, that hurt someone this much, I would be apologizing. Not because I was wrong, but because I was truly sorry for their pain.

This whole argument sounds like my kids fighting. My son steps on his sister's toe and she cries. I tell him to be more careful, and he says, "It was an accident! I didn't mean to step on her toe! She cries about everything! You always take her side!"

To which I say, "You aren't in trouble. But the polite thing to do when you step on someone's toe is to apologize and ask if they are alright. Even if you didn't mean to do it. Even if she was standing too close to you, (perhaps violating your personal space). And try not to do it again."

It's about that mature, too. Ugh.

Good point, but shouldn't sympathy and understanding go both ways?

Couldn't the people who were offended by the noose dummy say "It's possible this is just a Halloween decoration with no hidden meanings or racial undertones. Although I personally find it offensive and tasteless, I'm sure these people didn't intend to hurt my feelings so I'll just let this pass and look the other way when I pass this house".

Maturity would dictate that the people take down the decoration to spare this person's feelings, but it would also dictate that the person knows not to let a Halloween decoration bother them to the point of getting the police and mayor involved.

Really?? there was a time where getting the police involved was not permitted ....

There is no NAAWP or White Entertainment TV or scholarships for white children etc.

there is white entertainment TV - NBC, CBS, FOX, etc. turn on any of those stations at at any time, the vast majority of characters on the shows will be white.

i've never understood why people get so offended by the existence of a television station.

and there are many scholarships for whites. look up irish ancestry scholarships, italian, polish, german, etc. there are many. i guess its easier to get all offended over scholarships for blacks than to look around.

Who said I was offended? Maybe you should read deeper before you throw around accusations. My point is there shouldn't be a need to differentiate between the two.

i'm sorry -- i was speaking more in general terms and not you personally. there are many many people that say the same things about White Entertainment Television and white only scholarships - i've seen it on these boards before. and i have heard people be offended by them, though i don't really understand why.

I'm not offended by them, I have just heard the opposite where those types of scholarships are taking precedence where there's not really a need for a "minority" type scholarship since there is not "minority".

I know what I want to say but I'm having trouble wording it. LOL
