Farren's family lived in John's Day, Oregon in 1980. On his 18th birthday on August 26 1979, Farren told his loved ones that he wanted to see the world. He began traveling around the country, calling home at least once a month to assure his family that he was safe.
Farren's family last heard from him in May or June 1980 when he called them from San Francisco, California. He said he was staying at a hotel with some other young men, and that he lost his job and was short on money. He asked his mother for some money, but she turned him down. That same day, he called his grandmother and told her he loved her. He never contacted anyone again.
After several weeks, his family called the hotel, who said Farren left abruptly, leaving his possessions behind and owing rent. He has never been heard from again.
