FDA Set To Approve Pill Ending Women's Periods Indefinitely

This just sounds weird to me. We are supposed to have a period and to chemically and unnaturally stop it seems like playing with fire. I would worry about the long term effects too. I don't trust it just like i don't trust the morning after pill( not trying to get poilitical or anything, it seems dangerous). I have alot of reservations about any new FDA approved drugs. Just b/c the government says it is safe doesn't make it so. They also said Vioxx, Sledane, rudux among others were safe. They have lied to us before and put us in harms way, so the governments word on safety is not gospel to me.

I asked my doctor, because I was concerned as well. He said that the pill chemically mimics the cycle that is natural when you stop taking it for a week - but not because it is actually the same thing. It was designed to chemically mimic it because people who used the birth control pill when it was originally designed, would not have used it if they didn't feel that it was a natural cycle. So, it's a ruse that stopping the pill once a month is even done.

Women have been manipulating their periods for years, taking the pill early or late - whatever was in their best interest when there was a hot date, a swim party or some other occassion.

Nope, no testing or treatment yet. We don't have any medical insurance and I know how costly these kinds of things can be.
I try to stay positive...I am only 28, so there's still time!
What is "ttc?"

Do you skip periods or have them too often? If you do have any of these it can be solved with a blood test and maybe an ultrasound although an ultrasound isnt completely necessary. "ttc" is trying to conceive. Look up polycystic ovarian syndrome symptoms if you have either one of these problems, its the leading cause of infertility for women. Soulcysters.net is a good resource for information. It can be remedied sometimes through a low carb diet or herbs from a health food store. If you have cycle problems you could try vitex from the health food store. I used Nature's Way brand. I think it comes out to about $6 a month so its very cheap. The other name for vitex is chasteberry. Read up on the internet about it first though to make sure it wont be a problem with any health conditions or medications your on.

Clomid only cost me $15 for the first month so its a cheaper medication through your gynecologist if needed.

There is plenty of time :) I hope it happens for you soon :)

I wouldnt do it. The thought of it freaks me out. It just seems unnatural to me.

I'd wait a little to make sure the long term outcome is OK, then I'd totally take it! Maybe if I'd ever had a normal cycle I'd be sorry to see it go, but mine's been nothing but problems from the start.

Well, I just think that the female body was designed to have a period and to mess with that really doesn't seem smart.

Would it be great not to have a period? HELL YEH, and I'm sure alot of younger folks will participate.

I agree with an earlier post that long-term affects need to be examined.

I second this motion... I have HORRIBLE periods and HORRIBLE PMS.. always had and always will (probably) - Mom and other females in my family has/have horrible periods. Almost to a point on some months at being bound to the bed.
I would be first in line to NOT have periods anymore - but the long-term is what concerns me. I have had enough 'female' issues ((with pre-cancer cells)) and such that I would not want anything more to help these issues along.

I would rather have the periods and PMS ...

((which I am almost immune to them after 28yrs - wait let me check 40yr and got it when I was 12 - close)):bang:

I don't understand the fuss of this "new" pill. Ten years ago I took the depo-provera shots once every three months. I didn't have a period the entire two years I got the shots done. It was much easier than remembering to take a pill daily, that's for sure.

The only thing I can figure is that depo doesn't work that way for everyone, but everyone I've known that had them had the same thing happen.

*shruggs*

I always wonder why we want to screw with nature.
What is ironic is that the thing we hate andwish to control, our fertility and periods, is something many women would give anything for. I don't take mine for granted after watching a friend struggle with infertility.
I do understand that many women struggle with horrific periods, I did as a teenager.

I understand everyones concern about messing with nature, but having an autistic daughter on the verge of starting her period I'm very interested in something like this for her. I have been stressing lately about it and now it seems I may have an option to a possible surgical procedure.....
I wish they would have come out with this 8 yrs ago .... I had a hysterectomy because of endometrosis....this may have helped with the doubled over, fetal position causing, nausiating pain I went through on a monthly basis (sometimes x2 a month!!)

Mother Nature is going to be really p*ss*d!
We are made the way are for a reason. To stop what your body needs to do naturally cannot be good. So what happens to all of the stuff? It just absorbs back into your body? ...or does this pill just tell your body to stop making ithe process happen at all so that you don't have periods to worry about....but you'll have make sure you shave your face every morning? No thanks! It's a blessing to be a woman!
I hate the cramps, the bloating, the mood swings, etc as much as the next person, but in no way would I mess with the way nature designed my body to be.
I"ve never even been on the pill. :hand:

Just my :twocents: , fwiw.

ETA: Just wanted to say that I am sympathetic to those who suffer with the thier periods.....I have horrible ones as well....cramps that feel like labor sometimes....and PMS! Oh my....I get so moody. At the gyno one time we were discussing my troubles with PMS. She said" Do you cry alot?" I said "No , but the people around me do!" Yes, it's that bad! But some day, it will all come to halt...naturally. Until then....just pray for the poor souls that have to deal w/me on hell week!

It keeps your hormones at a constant level, rather than the fluctuations. It's the fluctuations in the hormones that cause the sloughing off of the skin and blood and the mood swings, cramping, etc.

Being on this regimine has reduced the numbers of hairs on my chinny chin chin by almost half. :-)

Just FYI. That's all. I have done this for so many years it doesn't bother me, but I know when my daughter asked about it, I told her no. So, I definitely see both sides of this situation. I am happy as I can be being period free (used to have painful periods after my miscarraige years ago.) But, I am not "sure" enough to put my own child on it. :-)

I understand this isn't for everyone but I have an *awesome* Gyn doc who I discuss many things with and I trust he will steer me in the right direction when I ask him about different options. A good doc will do their own "research" on the known effects of new medication, etc....

Im sorry you dealt with endo. I have friends that had it and they couldnt wait for their hysterectomy's. It was just too much pain for them to bear so they were done with their families as early as they could be. The main thing that troubles me with it is you dont know long term effects from it yet. The fda pushes things through way too fast without proper studies due to consumer wants. I would be careful, especially with a little girl who isnt fully developed yet.

Autumn~ I totally agree....I work at a hospital which also contains a children's hospital... I don't hesitate to ask any of these docs (especially pediatric) about a question regarding my daughter. My daughter is also under the care of several docs that I also consult with them on issues I may have. I definitely do not take her care lightly....I do my homework when it comes to health (hers and/or mine).

You seem like a very caring mom :)

Thanks Autumn....I try my best (it would be lots easier if they came with handbooks or manuels or something!!!!! LOL.....);)

There are lots of manuals out there, and people more than willing to tell you how to raise your child. Unfortunately, the handbooks always seem to be for the wrong child. :-)

One downside to this is you have no way of knowing if you are pregnant (accidents do happen). You never have periods so you wouldn't know if you are 'late' or missed a period due to pregnancy. You would have to wait until other symptoms of pregnancy develop and you may not find out you are pregnant until you are several weeks along. Meanwhile you could be unknowingly exposing the developing fetus to alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, prescription medications, etc. I'm on the pill and it has never failed me, but I do breathe a sigh of relief every month when Aunt Flow shows up, knowing that the pill has done it's job. :D
