SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Police are working to identify the remains of a woman found along the Big Sioux River in Sioux Falls.

Lt. Mike Colwill says the remains were likely there for at least three weeks. Two people fishing on the bank of the river found the remains Wednesday night and called officers to an area north of the Farmer’s Market in Falls Park.

An autopsy was performed Thursday and police hope DNA will help identify the remains.

She must not have told anyone she was going for a hike/walk? New to the area maybe? No one is missing her??

Lots of recent missing juveniles from Iowa - not sure any are close enough or right circumstances to consider:

I got the impression she was found along the banks of the Big Sioux River, which could mean she entered the river North of where she was found and perhaps flooding left her body on the banks in the park when the water receded? IDK, though.

The river is in SD but close to the state border with Minnesota:

ETA: I worded it poorly, but I'm agreeing with you-- she might be from out of town and perhaps brought there by the river. MOO.

Oh I see what you mean when l looked at the map. Initially, I was thinking she was visiting the park or Farmers Market. I bet you’re right, flooding or season melting displaced her.

The body found on Wednesday evening on the bank of the Big Sioux River near Falls Park has been identified.

Minnehaha County coroner Kenneth Snell was able to positively identify the body as Leah Anne Brosky, a 27-year-old woman.

In a press release, Snell was able to facilitate the accelerated identification process by finding local dental records which he then used to identify Brosky.

Brosky had been reported missing to the Sioux Falls Police Department on May 13. Brosky’s family, who is out of state, was notified of the positive identification.

Brosky's brother, Dave Brosky, said that she had lived between Rapid City and Sioux Falls for the past six years but is originally from the Chicago metropolitan area. She loved her children and family, he said, but struggled with addiction, homelessness and mental health issues.

"I hope that the city of Sioux Falls will expand outreach programs and help to those in the community that are struggling with addiction, homelessness and mental health issues so we can save and help more people so other families will not have to go through what our family is going through," he said.

He also thanked the Sioux Falls Police Department for their help in identifying his sister.

"Not knowing where she was and her missing was stressful on the family," Dave Brosky said. "I know my mother and I are getting some closure now and we're ready to bring her home and honor her life."

Brosky's body was found by two fishermen on Wednesday night along the Big Sioux River Wednesday night, near Smithfield Foods and Falls Park.

Authorities described the remains as intact but in a "very advanced" state of decomposition, estimated to have been there for at least three weeks.

The remains were found 20-30 yards up the bank of the river, but recent flooding means they could have been underwater for some time.

Authorities said Friday morning that an autopsy showed no signs of trauma, and the medical examiner ruled the cause of death as undetermined. While police have said they are "leaning toward" foul play not being suspected, they are still investigating.
