Five people, including three elderly women, were killed and at least 240 people were injured when a magnitude-6.8 earthquake, centered 17 kilometers below sea level, struck just off the northwestern Japanese coast Monday morning, knocking down several small buildings, authorities reported.

Saw some of the damage on CNN--Japan is no stranger to earthquakes--The Kobe earthquake killed thousands back in 1994 and the great 1923 Earthquake virtually destroyed Tokyo, killing tens of thousands--It plunged the country into an economic depression, eventually paving the way for the military to take over the country, and then we all know what happened after that
