PASCO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) - The principal of a Pasco County school is accused of stealing money that a student brought to school.

Pasco County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Edward Ebernathy, 50, of Land O’ Lakes on a charge of Grand Theft. Ebernathy is the principal at Connerton Elementary School in Land O' Lakes.

The Sheriff's Office say that on October 23, the 9-year-old student, who is mentally handicapped, brought some of his parents' money to school. When teachers realized the issue, they took the money and counted it, placing it in the principal's office. When the mother of the child went to school to get the money, deputies say the principal gave her only $1,200 not the $2,100 her child had brought to school.

"Subsequent investigation by deputies determined the principal kept the $900 difference," the Pasco County Sheriff's Office wrote in a press release.

Inconsistent statements
Abernathy was arrested after reportedly giving multiple inconsistent statements to investigators, including about whether or not he knew how much money was in his office. According to the report, he also told investigators that it was possible a student took the money from a hiding space inside speakers on top of a six-foot-tall shelf.

A spokesperson for Pasco County Schools said Abernathy has worked for the district for more than 25 years. He became principal of Connerton in 2016.
