FL FL - 6 + 1 (11 Jun 2022) Special Olympics delegates from Haiti, ages 18-32, Kissimmee, luggage & personal items left behind, 6 June 2022

I wonder if any of these individuals would have been eligible to emigrate through regular channels. Most of them seem too young to be in adminstration roles within the Special Olympics and probably would not have been approved for immigration purposes, especially someone who was intellectually challenged. One of the reasons a person may be inadmissable for immigration is if they put undue pressure on health and social services.

Since all we can do is speculate as to their motives and plans, I think they are a group of individuals who decided to take a chance to grasp the gold ring during a rare opportunity to be within spitting distance of a country that has a reputation for allowing refugees from places other countries ignore. As recently as October, many French Haitians who arrived in the US via the Mexican border were hoping that Canada would take some of them in. Instead, the majority were returned to Haiti from the US. I think it's possible if any of those Haitian asylum seekers had made it through the border they would have made their way to Canada.

One of the largest Haitian diaspora is in Miami which is pretty close to where they stayed but I think it's probably the first place immigration would have started looking. I don't think these Haitians would qualify anymore for TPS since the extension only applies to those who were already assigned as of August 2021. So it makes sense to me they'd try to travel to next largest community in North America.

Although Canada has a sympathetic relationship with Haiti, the U.S. and Canada have an agreement preventing people who first enter one country from applying for asylum or refugee status in the other. This means that if you entered the U.S. first and then try to apply for asylum in Canada, you may not be able to.

These are the exceptions to the Safe Third Country Agreement.

Interesting -- any idea if any of these gentlemen are related? Looks like a relative in Canada -- to an aunt or uncle -- could sponsor that individual.

And, the document indicates that Canada will not send one back to Haiti.

Can anyone call an immigration lawyer, or a Canadian lawyer?

I'm not an immigration lawyer, but I have worked for several years with bringing refugees into Canada. My opinion is that the Haitians are not refugees, and therefore would not likely qualify for sponsorship. And coming up through the US is another strike against their case. They would have been fast-streamed if they had applied for immigration while still in Haiti.

Ironically, most of the Haitians applying for immigration into Canada are fleeing conditions, not in Haiti, but in the US. Of those, some will be grated refugee status.

I hope hope these missing people end up in Canada. I trust they would be welcomed here.

Missing persons cases were filed and the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office was pursuing leads, but now, the sheriff says it’s a federal immigration issue.

Immigration attorney, Ingrid Perez, says the amount of time each delegate was legally given to be in the United States depends on which visas they were approved for, but it likely wasn't long.

“The visa is normally given for the amount of time you’re coming to perform or participate in your event,” Perez said.

Perez says, athletes can get permission to stay up to five years and even that can be extended.

Another option includes applying for asylum, but the director of Freedom Immigration, Jaaziel Figueroa says that route can be tricky.

“Asylum is a very difficult application because of the fact that there’s a lot of evidence needed to be seen for that. Before asylum, at least here in our offices, we like to explore different options possible for each person,” Figueroa said.

I wonder who is helping them survive. Some type of stealth organization I suppose.

I'm concerned about whether or not they followed procedures after entering the USA. If they have applied for asylum, refugee status, any appropriate legal status, that's fine with me & that's none of our business.

Hiding, not the same.

Agree. The answer to “what would Jesus do” is rarely clearer than it is in cases such as these.

Jesus said, “Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.”

Luke 20:20-26 NRSV (also found in Matthew 22:15-222, Mark 12:13-17, and other ancient texts.)

In this story, Caesar represents the Roman government, the legal authority where the Hebrew people lived.

Rome maintained borders.
