I am unable to actually access anything (just google results to links no longer working) but it looks like he is a Jr. His father died Jan 07 and resided in Hialeah. That led me to that yearbook. First school and yearbook (first page of seniors too) I looked at. That never happens.

In 1988 airlines had paper boarding passes. I wonder why it’s unconfirmed. Did he buy a ticket but not board the plane? A passenger list should have had his name, if he bought a ticket.

What or who was in NY? Maybe he met foul play there, if he did indeed fly up.
