It is, unless the media is wrong again.

I wish we knew why a DCF worker was going to their house 7 months ago. I don't want to feel like I am attacking a grieving family who is reeling from two accidents but that stood out to me as a sign that these children may have been victims of neglect.

I guess it was in their driveway. From Filly's link:

The tragedy happened Sunday afternoon outside the family's home on Nesmith Street.

Meloney Barnard said her truck had broken down, and a friend had come over to help her tow it to her backyard with his van.

i notice the mother & 2 daughters all have different last names. at the time the older child was injured her father was in the backyard of the residence. the baby who was killed would have been a couple months old, right? i have seen no mention of her dad; did she have a different father?

i do not mean this to be defamatory, just trying to understand.

Those poor parents. DCF was probably paying a family visit since the older daughter was deaf. Now this..some people just seem to have so many hurts in their life.

The fact they had social workers coming over to do a routine visit does not sit well with me. Obviously she was coming over to check on the welfare of these children which means their welfare has not always been good. But I have to keep in mind that even if this was caused due to neglect it doesn't change the fact it was a tragic accident and it doesn't change the fact the parents are devastated.
I really feel for the neighbor. I cannot imagine the horror when you realize what had happened.

DeltaDawn, would DCF be involved with a deaf two year old on a normal basis? Or were there concerns about her care?

  • #69
I feel for all of them, especially the neighbor. It sounds like things were a little hectic at that moment and no one was watching the baby.

It says the older girl who was run over is deaf, could the social services woman have been visiting due to her having a disability?

Would DCF be involved since the eldest girl is deaf? Is it routine for DCF to keep up with child who are disabled? I would think some type of grievence would have to have been made against them for DCF to get involved but I could be wrong.

No, DCF would not be involved just because a child is deaf.

I'm just struggling to understand how two children in one family could be run over.

Sorry SewingDeb:

But I thought the other sister was 6 years old and not 2??

In November 2007, her other daughter, Haley Runion, 6, was also run over by a car at that house.

If DCF was there in November 2007, obviously it was for a reason. We know DCF goes to homes where there is suspious neglect, a phone call, already in the system, etc.

My thoughts now are that I am a little perturbed that a DCF worker ran over the 6 year old daughter and yet posters have not been able to find anything about it. (I am NOT picking on Florida DCF), BUT, there has been many many facts out that they are way behind, lax, and etc.

Eventually, we will hear what the mother has to say when LE releases that information.

The 6 year old daughter is deaf. The deaf child was rolled up in a rug in a driveway.

With all due respect how the heck is the DCF worker lax when a little girl who is deaf is playing in a driveway? They have a yard obviously. The deaf community is extremely close knit. I have deaf friends. Even with "DEAF CHILD" signs posted their kids would never be allowed to run in the street playing or in a driveway where obviously cars park. That poor lady probably felt horrible. This may just be me, but no child should be rolled up in a mat or rug in a driveway.

There's a reason that DCF was there. It's not because the little girl is deaf. Absolutely DCF has messed up big time in alot of cases, but I don't think this is one of them. 6 years old. Rolled up in a mat. Where, where, where was the mother or uncle or friend of the family or the father of this child when she's laying in a driveway?

Thanks Littledeer...I misread the age. Good thing I'm not a reporter...lol.

I'm thinking the same thing about why DCF was there.

Filly,

You would think that parents of a deaf child would be extra careful when it comes to the child being outside at all. AND after that accident, that they would be extremely careful with all of their children.

Filly:

I hear your outrage. I have mine too.

I am considered deaf. I have one ear to hear out of with. I am now far older than 6, but I've been outside living life and could have been run over easily many times. (with or without a rug around me)

My parents adopted me. Yes, they were careful, but if you saw my story earlier, obviously they didn't watch me EVERY SECOND...............

That's all.

I do agree that there must have been a reason for DCF to have been visiting the house in November 2007. Is there any way to find out why??

However, I don't think it has anything to do with what happened to the beautiful little girl. Her sister must be feeling so devasted right now.

Prayers to her and the family no matter what happens from here on out.

Filly,

SD, I'm with you. Of course that's just the way I was raised up and the way I raised my child. I'm sure you are the same. Unfortunately what I don't see out my back driveway night after night makes this story not that shocking. There's a bunch of negligent parents out there. Then their kids almost get hit by a car. Some poor driver is having a heart attack THEN the lazy, negligent, big traps finally come out the door to yell at the driver and not their kids. It just hapened the other day to a little kindergarten boy two houses from me. These people do not care.

Of course I can't say that's the case with these people, but yes families with anyone deaf including adults are very careful about streets, cars, driveway's. Even with the proverbial "DEAF CHILDREN" signs the children themselves are even cautious. No 6 year old should be rolled up in a rug laying in a driveway. Hearing, or deaf.

Filly, this is what struct me as the oddest thing. Who does that? Who has a rug outside in the first place??? That's just weird.

I raised my children that way.

I do realize children can quickly get away from you while you are busy with other things. With a deaf child or a baby, it would make sense to keep them right by your side at all times.

I've seen many negligent parents over the years.

I've known parents who let their 6 year old run across a busy highway many times a day to see her friend...she did finally get run over but survived with only a broken leg. After that, she was not allowed outside unless one of her parents was with her. Usually this kind of thing is a wake up call if the parents care.
