Baby may not survive after being shaken by mother, police say

A Miami mother was arrested Friday after police said she shook her 2-month-old son, causing serious injuries.

Maria Sanchez, 25, faces charges of aggravated child abuse and resisting arrest.

Police said Sanchez confessed to hurting the boy, saying she accidently struck him in the head with her fist. However, police said the injuries were not consistent with Sanchez's account.

"He had subdural hemorrhage in his brain and retinal hemorrhages in both eyes indicative of abuse head trauma, which is also known as shaken baby syndrome," Judge Mindy Glazer said as she read from the arrest report.

A prosecutor at a bond hearing on Friday said Sanchez was "hysterical" and "confrontational" during her arrest. She actively tried to free herself from her leg restraints and had to be carried to the police car, the prosecutor said.

Sanchez is currently being in held on more than $100,000 bond at Miami-Dade County's Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

That is so tragic and senseless. I would bet she has probably been acquainted with DCFS, probably already has had children removed. Drugs probably too.

Great. Let's help her learn how to parent they probably said, give her a chance...they never say that about the children.

Emph. mine

Very well said. :(
I wish they'd give abused kids to good parents for adoption.

As in-- once it's proved you hurt and injured your child ... then someone else will get that child.

This is why I quit a job, to help women in treatment keep their kids. I completely did not think that these women could ever be good Mothers. Sure, one or two, but the hard core psychopaths, never. I wanted no part of the dysfunction. My opinion, once you demonstrate that you can and will abuse, neglect your children, there is zero potential for rehabilitation.

There's a LOT of doubt now in some medical quarters about the whole "shaken baby" thing.

Shaken-Baby Syndrome Faces New Questions in Court

In the absence of significant other signs of abuse I very much doubt I could return a verdict of guilty in such a case.
