GUILTY FL - Boy in a Box abuse trial - Parents, Timothy & Tracy Ferriter Arrested, Jupiter, Feb 2022

  • #521
The waiting list scenario is actually very real in some areas of the country. I have read about wait lists of 3-4 months for adults and children where I'm located in the northeast. I personally had some family trauma 3 years ago and my GP suggested I see someone, but she actually said, "And good luck - they're all short staffed, many are not taking new patients, you've got a long wait. If you're in a crisis, call 911 or go to the ER." Gee, thanks. I wasn't in need of that type of care, but it proved there was no assistance in the meantime other than self-help and many aren't even able to do that or their situation needs something more intense. Sad state our country is in.

Edited to add - I have no idea what excuse his parents were given, or what they perhaps made up. Just was stating my experience and what I've read about the state of mental health care here in the US in general.

Agreed throughout on the lack of available care. I work in counseling in schools and have had students in crisis who were admitted to the hospital but upon release were unable to get followup psychiatrist and therapist care. It is very hard to get what is needed.

Again, I can't imagine that getting care was an option given their abuse actions. The abuse was sustained and would be very hard to pass off as a we were in fear for ourselves or other children. I don't recall that they sought help from their pediatrician either. Given the adoption of this child, a pediatrician would have recommended a developmental pediatrician or an international adoption clinic which are easier to gain access to. Further, they had a homestudy with a social worker before their adoptions that would have had followups once back in the states so that would have been a resource as well as the social worker would have resources that dealt with adoption related issues and behavior issues. While none of these options would have been an instant fix, they had the opportunity to get support from any number of providers. I am an adoptive parent and can say for sure that these resources exist and the support for adopted kids who are in crisis or spiraling out of control.

Yet, there is still the pesky issue of once they were harming him, isolating him and locking him in the homemade box, any provider would have been required to report them.

No idea if waiting lists were actually an issue in THIS case but right now waiting lists are a HUGE issue all over the country. So many therapists are not taking new clients. WE ARE SWAMPED!
I’m a retired LPC/Case Manager and all my years centered around school-aged children and their families. Fortunately, our District Attorney’s Office offered services to students and families services which included counseling, psych evals, parenting, etc. Our referrals came via the teacher, parents, guidance counselors, the court system. and FINS. We were fortunate.

In that pre-sentencing release hearing....

Tim is all twitchy. Thoughts?

He tensed his muscles? He's on medication?

The judge likes the prosecution lawyer (she's really on the ball)..... I like this judge.

Despicable:

Tracy's parents adopted the youngest child. Yep, they picked one to give a home to. I guess the other kids are all on their own, and under DCF.

IMO they adopted the youngest child out to Tracy's parents to punish the older children for testifying against them.

IMO also, Tim shouldn't be allowed to see his children, per the prosecutor, but the youngest isn't subject to that ruling (because he's been adopted out), so the Ferriters have had as much access as they want. The older kids are "no contact". The parents have essentially and deliberately removed them from any relationship. Punishment. Sickening.

He raised his brow to someone as he entered. His hair & his jail attire seems perfect, pressed. He is visibly shaking looking at the judge IMO. He’s probably going crazy locked up. As it should be…hope the judge agrees.

MOO
Thanks for posting the article, @BeachSky.

I trust that Judge Coates Jr. will do the right thing and keep the convicted child abuser locked up. moo

From the article:

Coakley also refuted the defense's claim that Ferriter no longer has contact with any of the children.

"That is just not true," she said. "The youngest child in this case was adopted by his co-defendant's parents and he's had continuing contact with that child, even since he's been in custody."

I kinda think the judge was basically getting the prosecutor to write the response he already had, i.e. NO. She got the cases, citations, and the arguments, and he was on the same page as her, asking for more!. IOW he has everything he needs as far as his opinion and documented support for it. I think he'll take a few days, maybe add a word or two from one of the cases she brought to his attention, and then issue the written ruling.

By taking it "under advisement", the judge also makes Ferriter stew in jail. Delicious! The judge has made hope even more scarce, and Tim has to wallow in anxiety at the fraction of possibility. And Tim has zero chance of getting out until the judge has made that ruling! Maybe in a coupla weeks?

Defense was idiotic with this release motion unless the plan was to flee, just because of the anxiety involved in these very low odds.

If Tim was shaking like that on a minor hearing, can you imagine what sentencing is gonna be like?

He's not even in the big house yet....

I want to hear the judge's speech when he does the sentencing....

OMG did you guys see TF shaking in his seat??? Literally shaking?? Wow. He’s quaking in his boots. That was fear and panic imo. Not medication etc. The reality has set in. He can’t keep the stoic facade. The body never lies! Hair gelled perfectly. Jail uniform looking pressed but no one told his amygdala to play cool. We finally saw the real Tim Ferriter. The coward! I bet this is only a small inkling of what his son endured. Oh, but he has a toilet, sink and lighting.

The shaky show at sentencing is gonna be awesome.

Tim's grey hair will have grown in more by sentencing, too. Now it's just short roots.

I really wanted stripes, and not the tidy navy.

--- Video is 14 minutes.

--- Former inmate: "This man is not going to be treated well behind bars."

Tim Ferriter's New Life in a Box

Tim Ferriter returned to court asking for a bond release ahead of his sentencing. He was convicted of child abuse by putting his adopted son in an 8x8 box inside a garage. The judge denied the request but the hearing revealed more than just a bond request. #CourtTV looks at the significant changes in Ferriter's appearance as the reality of being locked inside a cell sets in.

He’s fortunate that he has electricity, running water, and a toilet…3=hots and a cot.

I noticed that the smirk is now missing from Tim Ferriter's face.

The prosecution's expert witness (a Brown psychiatrist who specializes in juveniles), explains the opposite: RAD is remediable in the loving environment and symptoms abate.

I haven't seen any testimony or evidence that showed RF as someone who charms, flatters, and manipulates to get his needs met. I have seen that in his parents via presentations at trial. The parents are violent, too.

The child was somewhere under 2 when adopted.

No psychologist here, but the sad part about this is that for whatever problems he might have had as a young child, they have exacerbated them and have done real damage to this child. I just hope it's not too late for him to have a happy and productive life. In TF's hearing to try to get released on bail pending sentencing didn't Coakely say that RF was relieving himself in the trash can of the room in his new (temporary) home? The damage is profound. It seems to me that if they had gotten this child into intense therapy very early on, it's possible this could have all been a thing of the past long before he even hit the double digit age of 10.
