And that's why it's so tough to deal with depression and addiction. Which came first? After awhile, it doesn't matter, since an addict will deny using/drinking to the end. It becomes essential to the picture. It is everything.

IMO the underlying cause must be dealt with. The addiction is the bandage used to try to mask the problem. Addition can be broken. A belief in something greater than oneself can be very helpful for the person to start believing in hope and the chance at happiness in one's life and one's own skin.
