GUILTY FL - Carlie Brucia, 11, Sarasota, 1 February 2004

I can't see how - the jury just said he was guilty on all counts - of course he should be handcuffed. The time is past where the court has to pretend he might be a good guy.

oh....i agreeeeeeeeeeeeeee

just with our justice system...there are times just like this where you slap yousellf, because i can see them saying...the jury will be more likely to sentence death because they saw him in handcuffs...............

just makes me nervous when i hear comments like this one!

He was just found guilty on all counts its about time he is held accountable for his crime & let the world see enough is enough. He shouldn't have any rights.

No, it cannot affect the ruling. The sooner this son of a b is on his way to hell the better.

I think he expected it. When the verdict was read he just nodded his head, almost like he wasn't surprised. Anyone else catch this?

SARASOTA, Fla. — The mother of 11-year-old murder victim Carlie Brucia broke her silence Thursday, telling reporters waiting for a verdict that she hopes Joseph Smith gets the death penalty.

Susan Schorpen, who did not testify during Smith's trial, spoke with reporters briefly outside the courthouse, where jurors are deliberating the 39-year-old auto mechanic's fate.

Asked if the trial will finally bring the family closure, Schorpen said that will not come until Smith is finally punished. "My daughter's gone. I'll never hold her again. I'll never hear her laugh again," said Schorpen, who is divorced from Carlie's biological father. "Until [Smith] meets his maker, and I'm not going to be there to see what he gets, that's the only thing that's going to give me any kind of satisfaction. There's nobody on this earth that can do anything to him."

That defense attorney can pretend all he wants that the jury hasn't already decided this guy needs to die and fast, but it won't help him in the least!

They interviewed the defense atty- He was actually......kinda....ok....( this might be the first time I have ever said this aboiut a defense attorney LOL) He said he accepted & respected the jury's verdict, and they must have decided the P.A. presented the evidence necessary for them to reach the verdict they did.

Well he can't bash them yet, they still need to decide the guy's punishment. The death penalty is riding on their decision, so for his attorney to say anything against them now would be not only foolish, it would be malpractice. ;)

True, some people don't do that. Have you noticed how demure Geragos was on Larry King a few weeks ago? Sort of like testing the water. I think no one jumped up and presented him in a good light and that is why we haven't heard from him since.

Smith's attorney seems to be OK as far as defense attorney's go. I believe his arguments will be good in the penalty phase. I don't think they will work but his intelligence and commitment are obvious.

yes- you are very correct there-I wasnt thinking..... I guess I was just trying to give him any ounce of credit I could, because I couldnt believe someone could be a defense attorney for 20 years...he is pretty well respected, so I guess I was just hoping he was admitting the SOB deserved the verdict..
