FL FL - Carol Ann Barrett, 18, found murdered following abduction in Daytona Beach, March 1980

Hi there. For years the other victims were tormented by the situation and outcome. Many killers themselves one way or another like over dosing drinking to death and suicide. There are only 2 living today. the palm print I was told was not matchable to anything in any databases. The mole was definitely distinctive. Sadly I have a lot of animosity in this situation. I don’t feel enough was done or pushed for more info. He did touch their belongings as he went through. I know someone on this forum mentioned law enforcement not pushing certain areas because of tourism. I believe this to be true. I respect law enforcement whole heartedly and have gone to school studying criminal justice. So it is not meant to bash law enforcement in any means.

Bumping another cold case... wondering if the surviving victims (friends Carol who were in hotel during her abduction) have ever thought of additional clues about the assailant. I presume for most people they’d want to erase this from their memory but it’s too bad there rarely seems to be follow up investigative reporting years later. LE evidently had an unresolved palm or fingerprint from the hotel and with the perp’s distinctive left cheek mole there’s a good chance of ID’ing him if he’s ever been arrested for something else.

he could have definitely followed them and if so where would he have been the whole time prior. From what we had been told was that he stripped them naked ton”slow” them down more.

I am thinking that he staged the robbery but really wanted a young woman to sexually assault. Why make them strip naked if it wasn't sexually motivated.
He could have followed them from out of state when they stopped for fuel and food.

This is so terribly sad, just heartbreaking. I feel so badly for all your sister's young friends. They were on spring break to have a good time, but lost their friend and were traumatized for years to come.

You're information about someone posing as a reporter visiting her parents is also disturbing. If that was the killer or someone linked to him, it suggests he's much more confident and comfortable hanging around Zanesville, OH. The same with anonymous phone calls to Carol Ann's parents home. JMO, it suggests someone who lives nearby.

hi I am her niece. I lived with her when I was younger and I was very close to her. I am still very close with a few of her friends. Including one of the few left living now.

Condolences on your aunt

Thank you for the clarification

Oh those poor angels. It wasn't their fault. I am so sorry for what you, your family, and all your aunt's friends have had to endure. I pray they find this 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬.

If you don't mind my asking, whatever became of "Pam"? Just hearing you say she was the weak link and that she became hysterical (I'm sure I would too), I so worry about how she coped afterwards. By any chance is she one of the 2 still living?

Can this newly enhanced composite crack 1980 Jacksonville cold case?

UPDATE to #coldcase @ActionNewsJax brought to you last year. A local company was able to significantly enhance a 1980 sketch of a murder suspect. Tune in at 6:15 to hear why the victim's niece says this "changed everything" @projectcoldcase #Jacksonville #Florida #coldcases

The odds are certainly against it, but I think the sketches might resemble Richard Lee Whitley, who at one time was the main suspect in the 1980 Kingfish Boat Ramp murders at Holmes Beach (south of St Pete and Tampa, near Bradenton). Police were never able to pin the 5 murders on Whitley, and eventually other suspects and theories were considered - but it remains a cold case.

About a week before the Kingfish Boat Ramp murders, Whitley had been up in Arlington Virginia where he raped and brutally murdered a woman in a gruesome crime. He had been a Virginia resident leading up to that crime, and before that he had lived in Chicago. I don’t know what ties (if any) he might have had to FL, but it is a fact that he was in Tampa on August 1, 1980.

Whitley was eventually executed for the VA crimes. I just thought it was worth mentioning, despite the lack of evidence. I think the composites share a resemblance, the Daytona Beach crime was was in 1980, and Whitley was near Tampa in early August 1980.

All conjecture

Serial killer confesses to 1980 murder of woman abducted from Daytona Beach Shores.
'The State Attorney’s Office of the 4th Judicial Circuit will not seek prosecution in the matter, however. After being consulted by the sheriff’s office, the SAO determined it would not file charges in the more-than quarter-century investigation as Mansfield is to remain behind bars in California, serving a life sentence for murder and four concurrent life sentences in Florida for murder in separate cases. The post also notes Mansfield’s alleged cooperation with detectives in other jurisdictions regarding even more cold cases.'

Carol Ann Barrett was found near Jacksonville International AIrport in March 1980'.

According to authorities, Barrett visited Daytona Beach with seven friends in March 1980. A man barged into the group’s room at the local Treasure Island Motel, ordered them at gunpoint to disrobe, robbed them and threatened to kill them if they resisted, said Project Cold Case, a Jacksonville-based homicide victims’ advocacy group.

Project Cold Case said the attacker then grabbed one of Barrett’s friends – saying that would ensure no one called the police on him – but she panicked, and he became irate. Barrett volunteered to go instead of her friend to appease the gunman.

She was found dead a day later in a ditch alongside Interstate 95 in Jacksonville, about 90 miles (145km) away, the local sheriff’s office said. A case supervisor at the agency told WJAX in 2017 that Barrett had been fatally shot, “execution” style, and there was no indication she had put up a struggle.

For years, the only piece of evidence that investigations had in Barrett’s killing was a sketch of the motel room intruder, based on the recollection of her friends. Then, in 2017, the Jacksonville sheriff’s office said it also had a partial palm print.

Mansfield emerged as a suspect in Barrett’s murder in 2022, the sheriff’s office said, without elaborating on why it turned its focus to him. He later confessed that he abducted Barrett from the motel and murdered her, the sheriff’s office said. He was 24 at the time.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office posted a statement on its Facebook page that the investigation into the four-decade-old murder of Carol Ann Barrett has come to end — two years after serial killer Billy Mansfield Jr. admitted to the slaying.

Mansfield is currently serving five concurrent life sentences for murder in a California prison. Because of this, the Florida State Attorney’s Office announced that it will not prosecute Mansfield for Barrett’s murder.

Barrett, 18, was abducted from a hotel room in Daytona Beach, Florida, at approximately 2 a.m. on March 23, 1980. She was visiting the state from her hometown of Zanesville, Ohio, to enjoy spring break with a group of high school friends.
