FL FL - Carol Ann Barrett, 18, found murdered following abduction in Daytona Beach, March 1980

So I have the facts of the case correct

-7-8 kids on break all in or aroud the room at the time

-Carol is originally outside the room with a friend when approached by the gunman who forces them back inside

-Robs them , then forces thm to remove all their clothing, according to the detective handling the case, does "things" with them (can anyone elighten me as to what he did ?)

-Exclaims he taking a hostage in order to prevent the rest from calling police , originally selcts another female "Pam"? who gets hysterical so Carol volunteers to go with the suspect

- Then forces the rest of them out onto a balcony naked before locking them out and leaving with Carol. It takes the group approx 20 minutes to attract attention and get help

-Carols body is found approximately 100 miles north (2.2 hours) off of I95 near the Jacksonville Airport

-She is found partially nude with a small caliber gunshot wound to the back of her head . Evidence the body was dragged to the ditch where she was found

-"Possible" evidence of sexual assault

Are those correct ?

Bumping another cold case... wondering if the surviving victims (friends Carol who were in hotel during her abduction) have ever thought of additional clues about the assailant. I presume for most people they’d want to erase this from their memory but it’s too bad there rarely seems to be follow up investigative reporting years later. LE evidently had an unresolved palm or fingerprint from the hotel and with the perp’s distinctive left cheek mole there’s a good chance of ID’ing him if he’s ever been arrested for something else.

What an odd outfit for a criminal, almost like he was overdressed to be there.

brown jacket, tan pants, brown suede shoes....

You're right - that's super weird. He'd look so out of place during spring break. Plus, how strange that it took people about twenty minutes to notice a group of naked teenagers on a balcony. Or maybe not? I've never been to Daytona for spring break!

I am the niece of Carol. And she is still an active cold case. Please please keep her name out there.

I was sure this case was already posted on WS but cannot locate; if it’s a duplicate feel free to remove or whatever - this case needs to be solved! The composite sketch of suspect has a very distinctive mole on left cheek - if this guy committed other abductions or murders and was spotted this identifier would probably have been noted.

Cold Case Spotlight - Carol Ann Barrett

18-year-old, Carol Ann Barrett left Ohio with a group of friends bound for Daytona Beach in March of 1980. While enjoying spring break at the Treasure Island Hotel, an armed man forced his way into their hotel room. After robbing the friends the suspect took Carol with him to ensure the others wouldn't call police.

Carol’s body was later found on the side of Interstate-95 not far from the Jacksonville International Airport. Included in this spotlight are links to 2 news stories and a compsite rendering of the suspect. Please take a moment to read, like and share this story in hopes of reaching someone with information.

If you have any information on the unsolved murder of Carol Ann Barrett, please call the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office at (904) 630-0500. To remain anonymous and possibly be eligible for a $3,000 reward, call First Coast Crime Stoppers at (866) 845-TIPS.

Sadly nothing came from this. Carol was my aunt. Please keep her name and memory alive. She deserves justice.

Welcome, Claireg! It's so kind of you to continue working to find justice for your aunt.

It's been a while since first reading about this case, but I wondered something.

Given that it looked like the killer was "overdressed", wearing heavier clothing, is it possible he was from the Zanesville, OH area? Was he someone who overheard some of the girls' conversations planning the trip to Daytona Beach and decided to follow them? Considering he wanted to kidnap the girl named "Pam", but took Carol Ann when Pam became hysterical, is it possible the killer was someone who had been secretly stalking "Pam"?

Jacksonville, FL is on the route going to and from Daytona Beach to Zanesville, OH. By the time LE found Carol Ann's body, the killer would have been back home.

Good question Betty. I too wondered why he picked "Pam" and what was it about her that he zeroed in on. Since he "did things" to the other people, perhaps there was DNA he left on their clothing, pocketbooks, wallets, etc.

the things were going through their belongings. He Made sure they were all in front of him in front of the balcony glass so they were away from any potential items that could be used against him.

-Exclaims he taking a hostage in order to prevent the rest from calling police , originally selcts another female "Pam"? who gets hysterical so Carol volunteers to go with the suspect.

Yes she volunteered her life because she was this type of person. She also thought that if Pam kept getting hysterical they would all die.

- Then forces the rest of them out onto a balcony naked before locking them out and leaving with Carol. It takes the group approx 20 minutes to attract attention and get help

-"Possible" evidence of sexual assault there was sexual assault.

They said that there was evidence of sexual activity in the previous 24 hours. However her boyfriend was not on the trip with her.

Are those correct ?
hi I am her niece. I lived with her when I was younger and I was very close to her. I am still very close with a few of her friends. Including one of the few left living now.

Thank you so much for allowing me to be her voice.

Hi. Sadly from what I have been told she was the weakest link. From the way she was acting. He knew he was not going to let anyone go from the beginning. Even though he said they would return. He would release them when he was clear.

Hi there
Yes he was over dressed. There was speculation that he was possibly from a different area. None of them knew or recognized him or his features nor his voice. Pam was targeted to be his hostage due to her weakness in personality. He could over take her easily from what I’ve been told she was the less fierce one of the bunch. Carol volunteered her life so that everyone else still had a chance. Due to how hysterical Pam was he was becoming very agitated. They came to mY family home because of a couple reasons. A “news reporter “showed up at our home with info that not many knew and he looked ALMOST identical to the composite drawing. There were also many threatening phone calls with information that not many knew. My mother was one of the few who answer the calls and listened to these and responded

I am thinking that he staged the robbery but really wanted a young woman to sexually assault. Why make them strip naked if it wasn't sexually motivated.
He could have followed them from out of state when they stopped for fuel and food.
