A bill named after slain Navarre woman Cassie Carli intended to make child custody exchanges safer didn't make it to the governor's desk this legislative session, but it will be back on the table next year.

Rep. Joel Rudman, R-Navarre, announced Feb. 23 he was filing a bill named the "Cassie Carli Law" after Carli's body was found in a shallow grave in St. Clair, Alabama, on April 2, 2022, after a custody exchange with her daughter's father Marcus Spanevelo.

UPDATE:

A St. Clair County judge has continued a plea hearing for Marcus Spanevelo until Jan. 10, 2024.

A trial date has also been set for Jan. 29, 2024.
Carli was last seen alive in Florida in late March 2022

Rudman sponsored a similar measure during the 2023 Legislative Session. Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book carried its analogue.

The bill cleared the House with unanimous support in April before dying without a Senate floor vote.

Rudman told the Pensacola News Journal the measure “must have run into some roadblocks” and that he and his legislative staff will “investigate and see what happened.”

A plea hearing was set for 9 a.m., but was delayed. Spanevelo's attorney, Jim Golden, said the hearing was pushed back because a request for transport was not filed to move him from federal custody to St. Clair County. The next hearing could take place January 29.

This is long overdue and should be nationwide. Too many parents do the film the drama routine to get the court of public opinion on their side. Then go to court to alienate the other parent.

A most sad and bizarre case. I don't think I have seen a case where is was so obvious then the Autopsy result throwing a wrench. The sad part in these cases are letting down the guard or cases where witnesses see but just pass by,,,RIP to victim with respect

Any updates on this case? I thought 4/28 was the trial date, but assuming it's not happening because they haven't made a decision on the death penalty?

Cassie was a friend who I went to school with my entire life. An amazing person who is missed by all. So far I haven’t heard anything. Pretty sure they are waiting on other decisions that could and will directly affect her case
