Charles Collingwood
Missing since December 1979 from Brevard County, Florida
Classification: Endangered Missing
Vital Statistics
Age at Time of Disappearance: 19 years old
Distinguishing Characteristics: White male. Brown hair.

Circumstances of Disappearance
Collingwood was last seen in December of 1979 in Brevard County, Florida. He was an inmate at Brevard Correctional Institution. He escaped from the institution in December of that year and has never been heard from again.

There is a possible suspect in Collingwood's case. Police say he was the suspect's lover. Questioned, the suspect denied the affair and said that Collingwood was his snitch, keeping him informed about other inmates. He said he had no part in the escape. Homicide investigators, aware of his past, weren't convinced. They thought Collingwood was threatening to expose the affair.

The suspect murdered and dismembered an 8-year-old Michigan boy in the 1950s. He served twenty years in prison for the crime. From 1976 to 1980, he worked as a guard at the Brevard Correctional Institution in Florida; the institution houses mostly teenagers. While the suspect was working there, five local boys disappeared.

He is also considered a suspect in the 1977 disappearance of 12-year-old Keith Fleming, and Kipling Hess . None of the boys were ever found.

Bumping case up. Investigators believe that Collingwood was murdered by John McRae, but McRae maintained his innocence until his death in prison. Collingwood's body has never been found.

My first thought... McRea killed someone, served his sentence, and then was allowed to be a prison guard? I know he was a minor at the time of the crime... but even so, is the government's access to these convictions only recent? Because even expungements are visible to investigative agencies (a necessity, since some crimes are aggravated by prior convictions, whether provable or not)...
I wonder if he got lucky or if someone in charge with a heart gave him a chance, given that it all happened when he was a minor. Still, children disappear under the watch of someone who had already been convicted of similar crimes, albeit as children decades ago... it's abundantly clear who killed him...
whatever it is
Rest in peace
