Frostproof triple-murder defendant T.J. Wiggins was brought back to Polk County from federal custody in late March to stand trial on capital murder charges in Bartow.
A Polk County Sheriff’s Office public information officer confirmed Wiggins arrived at the Polk County lockup on March 28.
His Polk County death penalty case is set for a hearing on all pending motions April 24 and a status hearing on April 25. Both hearings will be in the Bartow courthouse, but it is unclear if Wiggins will appear. Trial dates are often set during such hearings.

Federal court records show a federal judge agreed earlier this year to “stay proceedings” after Wiggins’ defense asked for the stay.
On Dec. 30, Wiggins’ assistant federal defender filed a motion to stay proceedings or alternatively continue the federal trial, records show. The federal court then entered an order on Jan. 3 setting a new federal trial date for March but did not address the stay.
So Wiggins' defense filed a standalone motion for a stay of proceedings in February to allow Wiggins to stand trial in his death penalty case in Polk County before the federal case.

Wiggins arrested (7/21/20) & charged (7/23/20) & indicted (9/30/20) with 3 counts of 1st degree capital murder, tampering with evidence (F3), possession of a firearm by a convicted felon (F-2) & possession of ammunition by a convicted felon (F-2). Plead not guilty. Held without bond. DA will seek DP. In custody of Federal Agency. On 3/28/25 was transferred to Polk County. Polk County
Murder trial was set to begin on 7/22/24 for jury selection & continued due to Federal trial starting first. Federal trial was set to begin on 7/1/24 continued on 1/8/25 & was cancelled. Citrus County

4/16/25 Update: Wiggins was brought back to Polk County from federal custody in late March to stand trial on capital murder charges in Bartow. A Polk County Sheriff’s Office public information officer confirmed Wiggins arrived at the Polk County lockup on March 28. His Polk County death penalty case is set for a hearing on all pending motions 4/24/25 & a status hearing on 4/25/25. Both hearings will be in the Bartow courthouse, but it is unclear if Wiggins will appear. Trial dates are often set during such hearings. Several trial dates had been set in the case, which began nearly five years ago. But before the previous trial dates could arrive, he was transferred into federal custody to await a trial on federal charges. Federal court records show a federal judge agreed earlier this year to “stay proceedings” after Wiggins’ defense asked for the stay. On Dec. 30, 2024 Wiggins’ assistant federal defender filed a motion to stay proceedings or alternatively continue the federal trial, records show. The federal court then entered an order on Jan. 3, 2025 setting a new federal trial date for March, 2025 but did not address the stay. So Wiggins' defense filed a standalone motion for a stay of proceedings in February, 2025 to allow Wiggins to stand trial in his death penalty case in Polk County before the federal case.
4/22/25 Docket Update: Motions hearing on 4/24/25 was cancelled. Status conference hearing on 4/25/25 was held. Next status conference hearing on 5/16/25 @ 9am.

*William Robert Wiggins (21/now 26) – Plead guilty to a plea deal. Will only serve 5 years in prison & 2 years probation. Will testify against TJ. Disposition adjudication withheld.
