Poe, circa 1990; Sketch of unidentified individual

  • Missing Since02/04/1990
  • Missing FromOrlando, Florida
  • ClassificationEndangered Missing
  • Date of Birth08/03/1963 (56)
  • Age26 years old
  • Height and Weight5'2 - 5'3, 100 pounds
  • Distinguishing CharacteristicsCaucasian female. Blonde hair, blue eyes. Poe's hair was streaked at the time of her disappearance, she wore minimal makeup and her ears are triple-pierced. She has a burn scar on her left shoulder. Some agencies may spell her middle name "Deanna." Poe's eye color may be listed as hazel and her year of birth may be listed as 1964.
Details of Disappearance
Poe had two full-time jobs in 1990, one at a newspaper and one at the Circle K convenience store near Hall Road and Aloma Avenue in Orlando, Florida. She worked the night shift alone, five nights a week, at the time of her February 4, 1990 disappearance.

Poe's boyfriend saw her inside the store at approximately 1:00 a.m. A friend who drove by the store at 3:00 a.m. saw her standing behind the counter.

At between 3:15 and 3:30 a.m., a customer came into the store and saw a Caucasian man behind the counter. He was between 19 and 25 years old, had long black hair and dark eyes, and was wearing a black t-shirt with the Megadeth rock band logo and a dragon spitting fire, a skull ring on his finger, and a wire earring with a cross in his right ear.

He appeared to be the only person in the store and the customer assumed he was the clerk. She wanted some cigarettes, and had to point them out to the man because he did not know where they were. He used the cash register and made change when the customer made her purchase.

This man has never been identified and it's possible he was just another customer, but investigators would like to question him and find out what he knows about Poe's case. A sketch of the individual is posted with this case summary.

Poe's store was discovered unoccupied at 4:00 a.m. The customers who realized the store was attended called police. A cup of coffee and a carton of chocolate milk were on the floor behind the counter, and Poe's Circle K smock was also inside the store.

Her car was undisturbed in the parking lot with her purse in the backseat. Her paycheck and car keys were also inside it. There was no sign of a struggle at the scene, the cash register was locked and there no evidence of a robbery. It appeared as if the store had simply been abandoned.

Tracker dogs traced Poe's scent to the rear of the store, over a fence and to a road, where they lost the trail, which suggests she got into a vehicle. She has never been heard from again.

Poe's boyfriend said men, some of them drunk, frequently bothered her while she was working the night shift at the Circle K, and he'd been concerned for her safety. A naked man chased her around the store two weeks before she vanished, until she was able to lock him out.

Authorities said that they had a suspect in Poe's disappearance in March 2002, but refused to publicly identify the individual. Investigators searched an area of land near the Chapel Hill Baptist Church in Orange County around the same time. The location is in 8800 block of Trevarehon Road near State Road 417.

Authorities stated that a re-examination of the evidence in Poe's case led them to the suspect and to the area. It is not known if any material was uncovered during the process.

Poe grew up in northern Virginia. She took ballet lessons for fourteen years and dreamed of becoming a professional dancer. She moved to Orlando in 1989, and worked two jobs; the other one was in the retail sales department at the Orlando Sentinel.

She purchased a brand new red Toyota, and planned to buy a home and open a catering business in the future. She was sharing a duplex with a female roommate. Poe's father and older brother have died in the years since her disappearance; her mother is still alive, however. Her case remains unsolved.

I wonder about the customer that came in and found the strange man behind the counter. I find this fact questionable. She was last seen at 3 am by a friend. If the dogs tracked her behind the store and to the road where they believe she allegedly got into a vehicle, why was the strange man behind the counter around 3:15? Unless she was killed in the store right after her friend saw her (which there would be forensic evidence of a crime and there was no sign of struggle) why would he stick around? Also, what was the motive since it wasn't robbery?
Also, the purse and keys in car, milk and coffee on floor, and the smock makes it sound staged IMO.
Who was this customer? Did she know Deborah? Was she there at the store alone or with someone?

I wonder if they can get DNA off the milk carton and coffee cup. If it has been well preserved that is. The POI in 2002 had to have been found by some method of evidence. Does that mean they had a hit in CODIS? Interesting that this hasn't been solved yet. It has so much more detail than most missing persons cases.

I’ve been researching and comparing and I think Deborah could be “Lake County Jane Doe” found in Sorrento, Florida in December 1991...

Deborah was last seen in February 1990 in Orlando, Florida and I can’t seem to find an explanation for the almost-two-year time difference between her disappearance and the discovery of the UID but there are an awful lot of similarities between the two! JMO

I suppose she could have voluntarily left her life behind or been forced to on the night she went missing. There were drugs found in the UID system. I hate to speculate too much on that...Google Maps estimates the distance between the two locations as around 45 minutes.

I attached a side by side of Deborah and the UID and also attempted to show their teeth up close...

(Deborah’s stats in parenthesis)
Date of Discovery: December 7, 1991 (1992)
Location of Discovery: Sorrento, Lake County, Florida
Estimated Date of Death: Within 12 hours
Estimated Age: 25-40 years old (26-28)
Measured Height: 5’4” (5’2-5’3”)
Measured Weight: 124 lbs. (100-105 lbs.)
Hair Color: Brown with blonde tips, back of hair shoulder length, shorter on sides and front; possibly razor cut. (Curly dark blonde hair. streaked at the time of her disappearance)
Eye Color: Hazel (Blue/Hazel)
Distinguishing Marks/Features: Stretch marks on abdomen. Had given birth to at least one child and possibly two. Fingernails partially painted. Ears pierced. (ears are triple-pierced).
Clothing: Shirt, white blouse, one white sock
Jewelry: Gold earring with stars and hearts

DNA, Fingerprints & Dentals: Available. Teeth natural and in good repair.

According to The Doe Network:
Circumstances of Discovery:
The decedent was found in the woods by a hiker about 75 yards north of Ethel Drive in Sorrento. She was nude below the waist and had been raped.
Joseph A. Rolle Jr. was convicted of sexual battery on the decedent and received a life sentence. He was acquitted of her homicide. He denies knowing her identity.

I'm fairly positive I sent this one in. I've been trying to go through and submit ALL of the potential matches I've found (in the order I found them). A daunting task to say the least! :D I know for sure I never got a response on this one if I did submit it...I would have remembered. And I usually keep this forum updated if/when I do get any feedback. I'll try and follow up!

I have submitted so many possible matches in the past 10 years and just started up again. A lot I get no response and it drives me crazy. I just sent one in yesterday for a match to James Hires (missing in 1981) to a UID in MD - I even attached a read receipt to it - and so far it hasn't been read. So this morning I emailed the contact listed on the UID's NamUs profile. It hasn't been read yet either. It drives me crazy because I don't think some people take us seriously. (I have actually made 4 matches and I put a lot of time into it, which I see you do too.

Keep up posted!

Thank you for your dedication and persistence. These families will be so appreciative when they find their missing family.

Yes!! We do put a lot of time into these cases! It’s frustrating, but here we all are and that’s amazing! :) I appreciate all of your hard work!! Never stop.

ETA: After looking at these two again, I decided to send a quick email to the ME in the UID’s case! Will keep the thread updated.

Megadeth man is a very interesting part of this case. I am back and forth between him being responsible for her disappearance to just a dude who walked into a store with no clerk and was so honest and forthright that he helped and gave health advice to a customer. Honestly and maybe surprisingly my gut says it is the latter. I think that he was a customer that just did what he thought was the right thing. Maybe he thought the clerk was in the restroom or the stockroom and he was just that helpful type of guy.
I wonder if the friend who saw her there at 3 a.m., which was 15-30 minutes prior to Megadeth man selling the cigarettes to the customer, was male or female. Also very curious that her smock was neatly folded behind the counter. What time did her shift actually end? Could she have just removed it and folded it up because she was leaving soon?
Just a baffling case that I am surprised doesn't have more posts.

I saw this case on Unsolved Mysteries... it's so sad that it still hasn't been solved and she hasn't been found... by the way I don't think the guy behind the counter kidnapped her... I think he was already gone by then... I think he probably got caught stealing some money... it doesn't make sense that someone would kidnap the cashier, come back and work the register...
Megadeth's witness also says that the black van had an airbrushed mural of Megadeth on the side... that seems identifiable too... for the witness to see the van, it probably would have been parked in front of the Circle K...
I wonder why authorities have always claimed that they were never able to identify or speak to Megadeth... if this was the boyfriend of one of Deborah's coworkers, he had left at 4am... I wonder if Megadeth and the coworker could have been the "customer" that reported the store was unattended at 4am...
Deborah was supposed to be working until 7am. m... I don't know if a coworker would have shown up for work before 7am (or so)...however a coworker could have gone to the store first thing in the morning noticed that no one was working and called someone... again, it is said that a customer was the one who reported that the store did not have any employees working...
either way
rest in peace

If it’s true that her boyfriend lived directly across the street from Chapel Hill Baptist Church (at the time) and the police searched there, clearly the tip was that he or someone close to him had buried her there. According to Wikipedia, that section of 417 was two years old at the time but regardless, there’s no exit onto Traverthon and that’s a very indirect route from her Circle K.

That location is in no way coincidental —> the boyfriend has to be a suspect. (Or someone close to him)
