PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Police released new information Monday in the investigation of a woman accused of killing two people, including her grandmother, at two different locations in northern Palm Beach County and shooting at strangers on Interstate 95 in Martin County.

Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens police have charged Amy Kern, 30, of St. Mary's, Ga., with first-degree murder and armed burglary in the deaths of her 81-year-old grandmother, Donna Kern, and her aunt's 59-year-old boyfriend, William Chapman.

From April 2012:

A Dwyer High School graduate who went on a murderous rampage three years ago, bludgeoning her grandmother with a tire iron and gunning down her aunt's boyfriend, Monday was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Amy Kern, 33, will be committed to a state psychiatric hospital until her sanity is restored, Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Jeffrey Colbath ruled. She can't be released without a court order...

Diagnosed as bipolar and schizophrenic in her 20s, her condition seemed to get worse when she had a baby in late 2008... Instead of being suicidal, she became homicidal, convinced people were trying to hurt the child.
