According to investigators, on September 20, 2025, at approximately 10:08 p.m., 22-year-old Xavier Omar Rigby was driving a 2021 Nissan Altima south on 49th Street, approaching 10th Avenue South, at a high rate of speed. At the same time, 38-year-old Kjersten Aileen-Hermance Strang was riding her E-bike in the curb lane south on 49th Street.

This is my worst nightmare. I see people actually riding in traffic now on e-bikes, e-scooters, skateboards, etc. I know Sarasota is allegedly pedestrian friendly city but….. I live here. I see the chaos, near misses, risk taking, even with golf carts. It’s ridiculous and scary.

I have an e-trike and will not ride in a bike lane on the roadways. I go to a park with a paved path.

It seems especially risky to do this late in the evening. Very sad. Poor woman.

I cycle in traffic all the time, though I do live in just a small city, and in an European country where people have always cycled. Sure I'll cycle through a park, if there's a cycle path, in order to get somewhere, but just in parks?? No! I have to get places!

I've been a commuter cyclist since my teens, even cycled as a child, my parents took us children out on quiet residential streets and taught us how before the advent of cycle paths. Sometimes cyclists take risks (or make mistakes, misjudgements) but so do car-drivers! And this particular driver was drunk apparently. Not the cyclist's fault.

RIP to the cyclist. Condolences to her family.

Maybe she needed to get somewhere in the evening? Could it be she didn't have a car?

Drunk or impaired driving is the height of irresponsibility on the road imho. Drunk/impaired drivers are a danger to everybody including themselves but especially to pedestrians and cyclists (we don't have airbags etc), even in the daytime.

Sometimes drivers may not even be drunk, some simply don't look. I've had a few near misses in my time, as both a pedestrian and cyclist - I mean nearly being hit. I've even cycled off into the ditch just to get away, with screeching brakes from the car behind me.

IME IMO
