TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has issued a Missing Child Alert for a 13-year-old boy who disappeared in Gainesville.

The Gainesville Police Department is searching for Ian Stephens, a 5 feet 4 inches tall white male, weighing 120 pounds. Ian has brown hair in blue eyes.

Police said he was last seen in the 3000 block of Southwest 30th Terrace in Gainesville, wearing a dark gray shirt, black shorts and possibly black shoes.

Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to call the Gainesville Police Department at 352-393-7500 or 911.

I hope he had a warm place to stay overnight. According to the weather report the nighttime temperature was in the low 20s, and he is dressed in shorts and a shirt, no coat.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - As of Friday evening, Gainesville Police Department officers are still searching for a 13-year-old boy who went missing from his home just two days before Christmas. Some neighbors say they saw the child before he went missing.

Officers say Ean Stephens, 13, was reported missing on Thursday after he left his home at Oak Glade Apartments on Southwest 30th Terrace. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement issued a Missing Child Alert on Friday.

Officers say Ean was wearing a black hoodie with a Nike logo on the front. Some neighbors say they saw Ean playing in the area the day before. One couple, in particular, says they immediately bonded with Ean after only knowing him for a short time. Now they just want him home safe.

“Ean is a neighborhood kid, he’s a fixer in the neighborhood and we really miss him because he talks to everybody,” said Reverend Marvin Green, a neighbor. “He’s super friendly, nice kid and we’re always asking him about school and education because we’re educators. We just miss Ean and we’re just asking the neighborhood to come together, please have concern and pray. Let’s bring Ean home wherever he is. We’re praying that he’s safe.”

Investigators are concerned about Ean’s safety as the temperatures drop in the region. Police are asking that people keep an eye out for Ean, saying he could possibly be on foot or on a bike.

The neighbor says he's super friendly and talks to everybody. I hope he wasn't friendly to the wrong person.

Does anyone else think it’s weird we’ve heard from neighbors but nothing from the family/parents? And the only pictures they have of him are older and with no shirt on? Like no one in the family has a nice picture of him? And the family isn’t on the news pleading for help? And his name is spelled differently on a couple of fliers?

This article says new picture released of black hoodie "(current photo of Ean in the sweatshirt shown above)" BUT is that a "black hoodie with a Nike logo" as mentioned in post # 3? (I'm having a hard time making out Nike in that picture).

He’s been found. After reading some things from his relatives, I hope they find a better living situation for him.

According to arrest reports, Ean was living with the Stephens at Oak Glade Apartments but did not attend school. The investigation revealed that he spends his days walking around outside, talking to people of all ages and backgrounds, including “a man currently incarcerated under a rape charge, felons, dangerous criminals, drugs addicts, and drug dealers.” A Gainesville Police Department (GPD) officer reported that Ean has no phone or any other means of communication, does not have a key to the Stephens’ apartment, doesn’t know the Stephens’ phone numbers, doesn’t know his own address, and thinks he lives in “Ocala Apartments.” Ean reportedly does not know what city he lives in and cannot read or write; he has not attended school since second grade.

  • Ean disappeared Dec 23 and 2 days later a detective spotted him in surveillance video from outside a business in another county.
  • That led them to a witness, Tiffany Mejia, who had an inconsistent story. On Christmas, they went to her house with a warrant and she admitted she knew where Ean was.
  • Ean was found safe northwest of Gainesville.
  • Tiffany was charged with tampering with evidence, interference with child custody, and multiple felony drug offenses.
  • A man claiming to be Ean's second cousin, Brad Burns, said Ean had been bounced around different family members’ homes for years, and Ean's grandfather had taken him.
  • Ean’s grandparents are Tommy Stephens and Jamie Stephens who have each been charged with child neglect and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
  • Ean is now in the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families.
