TAMPA — Eboni Wiley met Granville Ritchie just a few days before 9-year-old Felecia Williams went missing.

She and Ritchie had a budding romance that began when he spotted her walking along an east Tampa street one day in May 2014. He pulled up alongside her in his silver Lexus. He asked how old she was, said he wanted to make sure she wasn’t too young. Then he asked for her number. They chatted. Later that night, he picked her up and they went to his Temple Terrace apartment. Ritchie charmed her with talk of a wealthy future. They took Ecstasy. They had sex.

“He sold me a dream,” Wiley said Monday on the witness stand. Days later, the dream morphed into a nightmare.

Wiley, now 29, is the star witness in the trial of Ritchie, the man now accused of raping and killing the 9-year-old girl. Wiley is also the one who prosecutors say delivered Felecia to him.
[...]
She was gone for about 50 minutes, paying a dealer $20 for a baggie of marijuana. But when she returned to the Doral Oaks apartment complex in Ritchie’s car, Wiley said that she couldn’t get through the front gate. The entry code he gave her didn’t work.

She called Ritchie to check on the girl. He told her he gave Felecia money and sent her to buy candy at a nearby CVS store, Wiley said.

So Wiley drove to CVS to try to find Felecia. But the clerk had not seen the girl.

Worried, Wiley drove back to the apartment. A neighbor let her through the gate. When she pulled up outside, Wiley testified, she found Ritchie shirtless, sweating and pacing. He seemed panicked, she said. She told him to calm down.
[...]
It wasn’t until the next night, when police told her that Felecia’s body was found floating off the Courtney Campbell Causeway, that Wiley told the truth.

Wiley was charged with lying during a missing person investigation. Five years later, that charge is still pending. If convicted, she faces up to five years in prison. She told the jury the state had promised no leniency in exchange for her testimony.

Eboni Wiley says she had just started dating Ritchie in 2014 when the two went to pick up her goddaugther, 9-year-old Felicia Williams.

They took the child, nicknamed Sugarplum, to Ritchie's apartment, but Wiley testified she was on the drug, Molly.

“I was and I wasn’t concerned, because how he made me feel comfortable on the first night I met him, and how he made me feel when I went to pick up Sugar plumb. It was like he had that concern of like a father figure. That’s how I felt," Wiley said on the witness stand.

Wiley said other than checking the CVS, she and Ritchie didn't look for the child at all and actually had sex in his apartment.

She said she also lied to police about what happened before the girl's body was found.

A portion of Monday's testimony:

Prosecution: "You were told she was found deceased, is that correct?"

Wiley: "Yes."

Prosecution: "And so what did you tell law enforcement then?"

Wiley: "I told them that I lied."

Prosecution: "What did you lie about?"

Wiley: "I said I left her with Trevor and he wanted me to go get some weed for him and when I came back he wasn't there."

Defense probes lies told by key witness in slaying of 9-year-old girl
Outline - Read & annotate without distractions

TAMPA — Eboni Wiley doesn’t deny that she lied.

She lied to Felecia Williams’s mother, and to the police, when she first described the circumstances of the 9-year-old girl’s disappearance in May 2104.

Wiley also doesn’t deny she has taken drugs and was under the influence of MDMA — commonly known as ecstasy or molly — on the night the girl vanished.

So can the jury in Granville Ritchie’s murder trial believe her now?

On Tuesday morning, Ritchie’s defense attorney tried to cast doubt on Wiley’s credibility as she told a jury what she calls the truth today.
[...]
Brunvand also asked Wiley about her history with drugs. Specifically, he brought up a 2012 incident in which she called police because she was having a “bad trip” after taking MDMA.

“You described it as Satan trying to get into your mind,” Brunvand said.

“I was so high,” Wiley said, her voice rising, “I felt like I needed to be protected.”

Jurors also heard from Detective Kerri Spaulding. She talked about scratches on her patrol car from trees that were on an access road that led to where Williams' body was found.

"I had scratches down the side of my driver side door. 'And do you know that was caused by the bushes?' Yes, because I had just gotten that car and it was a Dodge Charger, charcoal gray, and I was driving, I could hear like a high pitch squeal sound that you could tell that branches were scratching down my car. It was a really narrow road and the car was low so I was trying to stay on the road because if I was coming off the road I was afraid the car would bottom out," Spaulding said.

Officials say this is important because investigators said they found similar scratches on Ritchie's car, which would put him where Williams' body was found.

Jury in Granville Ritchie’s murder trial hears his account of girl’s disappearance
SEPTEMBER 18, 2019
TAMPA — It was less than a day after a 9-year-old girl vanished from a Temple Terrace apartment that police first heard the name Granville Ritchie.

As the search for Felecia Williams spanned the Tampa Bay area that Saturday in May 2014, detectives from Temple Terrace exchanged a series of phone calls with a man whom they were told was one of the last people to see the girl. Later that afternoon, he agreed to be questioned. A video camera captured the May 17, 2014 interrogation.

“Do you have any idea where this girl might be?” Detective Thomas Carroll asked.

“I wish I knew," Ritchie said.

It was the first time jurors in Ritchie’s murder trial heard the voice of the man, now 40, accused of raping and killing the 9-year-old girl.

In the video, he sat at a round table and accounted for the past 24 hours of his life. He often leaned on his elbows and gestured energetically with his hands. He spoke in a heavy Jamaican accent. He seemed at ease, though maybe slightly annoyed at the inconvenience.
[...]
Not long after Ritchie entered the interrogation room, someone found Felecia’s body floating amid rocks and mangroves on the north side of the Courtney Campbell Causeway.

Investigators would later analyze Ritchie’s cell phone records and said his cell signal put him in the area of the Causeway the night that Felecia was last seen.

You're welcome. I'm glad Law&Crime is covering the trial. Local media coverage has been disappointing.
Defense didn't have an opening statement. I'm curious if they will provide any defense witnesses.
I'm also wondering why Ritchie's mother hasn't yet testified. According to the tweets, she was to testify Thursday with an interpreter.

I haven't watched the full trial and am catching up on some of it now. On Friday, Forensic Botanist Jacob Landis testified. I am local to the Courtney Campbell Causeway and have some interest in the vegetation and applicable testimony.
