FL - Five Kids in Soiled Diapers Found Trying to Cross Florida Highway

A 24-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of child neglect after five young children were found attempting to cross a Florida highway wearing nothing but heavily soiled diapers, police said.

The kids, aged from 1 to 5, were stopped by a motorist before they entered traffic lanes on Route 19 outside Spring Hill, 40 miles north of Tampa, Tuesday morning.

The children were unable to say their names or where their parents were. The youngest child, a 1-year-old girl, had a "severe rash on various parts of her body" that appeared to have been there for several weeks, according to a statement from Hernando County Sheriff's Office Wednesday.

Hopefully they will be put in a stable, loving foster home. Can't imagine the horrible, scary life they've lived thus far.

Around 9 a.m. on December 29, a concerned driver called Hernando deputies to report young children attempting to cross U.S. 19 to get to Weeki Wachee Springs. The children were too young to advise their names or who their parents were. All of the children were wearing heavily soiled diapers. The youngest child had a severe rash on various parts of her body and according to paramedics on scene the rash appeared to be several weeks old. Deputies say the ages of the children range from five to one years old.

"A little odd, like not a normal mother," Amy Cooper, who is also staying at the Motel 6, said about McCarthy. "She seemed she wasn't paying attention to much that was going on."
