Airport shooting suspect is being treated for schizophrenia, defense team says

Airport mass shooting suspect Esteban Santiago is being treated for two severe mental health conditions that can cause people to lose touch with reality, but he remains legally competent to stand trial, court records show.

Two teams of doctors at different jails have diagnosed Santiago with two psychotic illnesses: schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, according to his defense attorneys. Both conditions, when not treated correctly, can result in hallucinations and delusions, mania, depression and other symptoms.

[h=1]Florida airport shooting suspect charged, could face death penalty if convicted[/h]
[h=3]Esteban Santiago charged with an act of violence at an international airport resulting in death[/h] The Associated Press Posted: Jan 07, 2017
The Iraq war veteran accused of killing five travellers and wounding six others at a busy international airport in Florida was charged Saturday and could face the death penalty if convicted.

Esteban Santiago, 26, told investigators that he planned the attack, buying a one-way ticket to the Fort Lauderdale airport, a federal complaint said. Authorities don't know why he chose his target and have not ruled out terrorism.

Santiago was charged with an act of violence at an international airport resulting in death — which carries a maximum punishment of the death penalty — and weapons charges.

"Today's charges represent the gravity of the situation and reflect the commitment of federal, state and local law enforcement personnel to continually protect the community and prosecute those who target our residents and visitors," U.S Attorney Wifredo Ferrer said.

Airport shooting suspect's trial expected to be postponed for death penalty decision

The trial of the man accused of fatally shooting five people and wounding six at Fort Lauderdale’s airport is expected to be postponed during a court hearing later today.

Esteban Santiago’s trial has been scheduled tentatively for Jan. 22 in federal court in Miami.

But the lengthy federal process to decide whether prosecutors will seek the death penalty is likely to force a delay, court records show.
