On Thursday, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd held a news conference regarding the massacre of four people in Lakeland that occurred over the weekend.

The sheriff stated he is going to try to answer the question: "How did this evil person" find the victims?
Judd reiterated there was no relationship between Brian Riley, 33, and the victims, but investigators now know why he came across the victims in the first place.

A judge gave the defense of the man accused of killing four members of a North Lakeland family a third extension to file an intent to claim insanity in his case Friday.

Public defender Jane McNeill asked Circuit Judge J. Kevin Abdoney for another status conference to be scheduled this summer for Bryan James Riley, 33, of Brandon so the defense can continue to prepare to claim insanity in his case.

Polk County judge rules death penalty jury verdict must be unanimous in Lakeland quadrulple murder case against Bryan Riley.

The jury to be convened next year for the Bryan Riley quadruple murder trial must come to a unanimous decision in order to recommend a death penalty should he be found guilty, a judge in Polk County has ruled.

But the ruling issued by Circuit Judge Kevin Abdoney on Wednesday in the 10th Judicial Circuit might not be the final say on the matter.

By email on Friday, Assistant State Attorney Jacob Orr said, “We are appealing that order.”

His colleague and prosecutor on the case, Lauren M. Perry, filed a motion to use Florida’s new law that allows a judge to impose the death penalty after a jury vote of 8-4. Previously, state law required a jury to be unanimous in recommending capital punishment.

I remember when this hit the news, I was horrified. I had forgotten about it also, it seems there is always another sicko perpetrator causing death and destruction to innocent folks who are just living our lives. Heartbreaking and terrifying at the same time.
