The former New York Giants wide receiver is accused of killing a man in Lake Park, Florida in April 2021. The former Florida State University and New York Giants wide receiver tried to claim a “stand your ground” defense in the first-degree murder trial.

Travis Rudolph took the stand earlier this week.

On the night of the deadly shooting, Rudolph had just gotten into a fight with his girlfriend at his home in West Palm Beach. According to a probable cause affidavit, the fight escalated when four men confronted Rudolph at his home. The former NFL player then grabbed a gun and shot at the group as they ran off.

Two men were shot: Sebastien Jean-Jacques died and Tyler Robinson was hospitalized but recovered.

WEST PALM BEACH — Jurors found former Florida State University football player Travis Rudolph not guilty of murder Wednesday, concluding a two-week trial in which Rudolph insisted he killed a man and almost killed three others to save his own life. The jury reached its decision after fewer than four hours of deliberation.

Rudolph, who played briefly in the NFL, faced one count of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder for the fatal shooting outside his Lake Park home two years ago. The 12-person jury had the option to convict him of lesser offenses, including second-degree murder and manslaughter, but rejected those as well.

“I’ll pray on the family, I’ll be praying on Sebastien.” Rudolph said he acted in self-defense after a confrontation turned violent outside his home in 2021 — one man was shot and killed and another was injured.

I've watched some of the trial, and I can see why the jury didn't find him guilty. The investigation on the prosecution side was minimal. While the defense had all kinds of video to prove who the aggressors were. And Travis came across as direct and honest. He wasn't trying to 'tell a story'.

When I originally heard about this story I fell for the NFLer stereotype...that many have been given large sums of money at a very young age and don't know how to handle it...therefore fall into trouble.

But these guys came to his house to attack him. What would you do if a group of people show up to attack you, and likely want to kill you and your brother and your mother is at risk? I believe him.

This young man has gone through a lot. He seemed to have hit the jackpot in making it to the NFL, but then tore his ACL and lost his NFL career. And then his father was shot at work (apparently an accident, but the family don't believe that). And then this. Travis (and his family) have lost 2 years of their lives not knowing if he would spend the rest of his life in jail. And yet he still showed grace.

I am so happy that they can now move on. I hope Travis achieves his dream of making it back into football.
