By the way, watching that testimony, I have to say that "Wendi" seems to be aging in a way that is, let's say, the opposite of pleasantly.

I wonder if those plastic surgeries had any long warranties?
Oh, did she undergo plastic surgery?

They tried that. He got a position there on a trial basis for a year. He wasn‘t invited back. According to Epstein’s book, it was because Wendi was given a job there, too, for the year, and she wasn’t good at it. They knew if they hired him, she would have to work there, too, and they didn’t want that. So, there goes their dream of living in Miami. Epstein’s book is good.
Thanks for the endorsement of Epstein's book, amicuscurie! That is on my wish list now for Christmas!

And it has been said that Charles Adelson did not stand when the jurors entered the courtroom after they had reached a verdict. Saw that on YouTube -- STS analysis post verdict.
Charlie did not stand. I was hoping an officer would jerk him out of his chair. The attorney didn't even give him an elbow.

And he was cuffed. He hadn’t been cuffed before, I don’t think. And no tie. Jansen said they sometimes do that, they make them give up the tie in case they hang themselves. Maybe they knew what the verdict would be. He probably didn’t stand because he didn’t want them to see the cuffs.

Looks to me like she gets Botox and fillers, maybe some lip fillers. I think most women in her age bracket, social and financial status do though.

I thought the Judge told him not to rise/stand when jury entered, as he was already shackled and they take great lengths to hide that from the jury

Just saw the post-verdict interview with the Markel family and they really have handled this with dignity, composure, and grace. They seem like a really nice family. It's awful that they've been put into this situation.

This isn't right and it's not what I recall Epstein saying. What happened is that Dan did not get a faculty vote because he had failed to garner support from voting faculty members. One problem was that they felt he was not engaged with the life of the faculty, often skipping out on paper presentations. Another was that a lot of the faculty members thought he was rude and dismissive of their ideas and strongly opposed him. Finally, he didn't really make any allies who would go to bat to try to overcome these objections and get him hired. I don't think UM hired Wendi at that point, she had barely graduated law school. Regardless, the reason Dan didn't an offer there was predominantly Dan himself.

I believe the judge told him not to stand actually. I was confused as well, because judge said "jury comes in, remain seated....everyone else please rise"

I was confused until he exited and saw he was already cuffed. Assume that's why?

Thanks - I need to read Epstein's book

Rude and disrespectful. Both of them!

ETA - I didn’t realize the judge asked him not to stand.

Georgia's great but anything other than a guilty verdict will have me thinking the State needed a more demonstrative prosecutor like Kelly Siegler.
Kelly Siegler gets it wrong sometimes

I recall he said the bit about Wendi in the book. They didn’t want her, and she came with him. But it’s been a while since I read it. They gave her a job at a legal clinic, like she did at FSU. They also didn’t like some things about Dan.

Good catch, sounds like they both were the reason he (they) didn't get hired. For what it's worth, I know several people on the UM Law faculty who were there when Dan was visiting and they told me quite a bit about the issue. There was a lot more to it than just the facts Epstein mentions.

I believe the judge told him to remain seated when the jury came in (because he was handcuffed).

Wow! Sounds like there’s a lot more there. It always amazes me how many people seem to have some knowledge of these people or this case. It’s a small world, and I guess Dan was well known.

This is a very common situation in academia. When hiring a professor, the university often has to find a job for the 'trailing spouse' as well. It can be a difficult issue but schools are used to dealing with it. (At least Miami is a big city, at many rural schools the college may be the only employer of note in the area.)

I have trouble believing they would have passed on Dan just because of Wendi. I'm sure they could have found something for her to do. She may not have liked the job they offered her, but that's a different issue.

Does anyone know if it usual that a defendant is handcuffed before the verdict is read In Florida? And they took his tie. That’s a dead giveaway it was a guilty verdict.

This is true in some cases, as at FSU when the job market is hard, the location is unappealing, and/or the trailing spouse comes from out of town. But there's no way UM needed to hire Wendi to facilitate them moving there. Wendi was--obviously--desperate to get to Miami and would certainly have made that clear to the law faculty. Also she's a Miami native with a UM degree and there's a huge legal job market in that city. Plenty of options for her outside the law school. No need for UM to hire her to keep/get Dan.
