TARPON SPRINGS — A woman who was fired from her job at the Tarpon Mall Publix Tuesday morning later shot and killed a man in the parking lot and was then shot by a Tarpon Springs police officer in a gunfight inside the grocery store, police said.
The woman, identified by police as Arunya Rouch, 41, survived and was flown to Bayfront Medical Center.
The violence began about noon, police said, when the woman fatally shot 40-year-old Gregory Janowski of Spring Hill in the shopping center's parking lot. The woman, still armed, then went inside the Publix at 40932 U.S. 19, police said.
Tarpon Springs Detective Michael Trill was the first officer to respond to multiple 911 calls, police said. He went inside the store after the suspect.
"The officer confronted her, and she fired at the officer," said Tarpon Springs Lt. Barb Templeton. "The officer was forced to fire back."
