Details of disappearance updated:

Hiromi Kazuni – The Charley Project

Kazuni was last seen in the parking lot of Dino's Restaurant on Fort Myers Beach in Lee County, Florida at 6:00 p.m. on July 11, 1986. The restaurant was closed for the summer at the time. She had been going door to door at various businesses and residences in the area, selling Garfield hand puppets for the Unification Church. She was carrying the puppets in a large back shoulder bag.

Residents and store employees past Dino's Restaurant along Kazumi's route don't recall having seen her, suggesting she never made it past the restaurant. She has never been heard from again.

Kazuni was born in Japan and her parents still lived there at the time of her disappearance. She joined the Unification Church in 1981 and was a faithful member. She had been selling the puppets with a small group of church members, but she was alone at the time of her disappearance. Her case remains unsolved and foul play is suspected.

I doubt the Unification Church was involved, but that doesn't rule out someone from the congregation. However, I'm more inclined to think it was a stranger.

I don't wish to make assumptions, but as a young Japanese woman in America on her own, Hiromi may have lacked street smarts and knocked on the wrong door. Poor girl was just trying to do something good for her church.

BUMPING for Hiromi.

Sad that her case has generated such little interest. I feel so sorry for this poor young lady. She came to America to do good deeds, only to be taken advantage of someone sinister.

I'm also more inclined to think it was a stranger - I wonder if the police ever went door to door looking for her

Dino's Restaurant was near 11500 San Carlos Boulevard, according to my research. A business identified themselves as the next-door neighbors and used that address. See the clipped classified for information on the location of the restaurant (Jan 4, 1984 News-Press; 14C).

Hiromi was traveling a predetermined route on the night she disappeared. I wondered who selected her route for her and if that person waited in the parking lot of the closed restaurant for an abduction the night that she disappeared. Her church has been described as a cult.
