AVON PARK, Fla. (TCD) -- A 54-year-old grandfather and his 34-year-old live-in girlfriend face child abuse charges after allegedly keeping a 9-year-old boy in a filthy room built out of plywood.

The Sheriff’s Office said officials searched the boy’s home on State Road 17, where they noticed his room was "filthy and had an 'overwhelming' smell of urine." The room was reportedly built out of plywood with holes "large enough to allow insects and rodents to enter."

During an interview, the boy reportedly told investigators that he was "often confined to his room –– with the piece of plywood screwed shut –– for periods of time that were so long he was forced to soil himself." According to the Sheriff’s Office, the child said he could only shower about once a week, and he would often shout at the security camera in his room to be let out with no success.

The child also reportedly said he endured physical abuse at the hands of his grandfather and legal guardian, Jack Young, and he was denied food as a form of punishment.

The Sheriff’s Office arrested Young and his girlfriend, Ashlee Marshall, and they were each charged with one count of aggravated child abuse. Their bonds were set at $50,000.

Another absolutely cruel pair of awful persons -- they did it because they could, and who knows whatever other "reasons" they had for such inhuman treatment of an innocent 9-year-old boy.

So glad it will stop now, but the 9-year-old may well never forget it.
Hoping he will receive good therapy and learn that the world can be a good place and not an every-day/every-night horror show.
A clean room with clean sheets and clothes, good food, making friends, and learning to trust good people. That's a lot of things that he needs, and the sooner, the better.

Yes, this is the same family. The young boy had ran away from home but was later found by law enforcement. The child was removed by social services; the grandfather and girlfriend were arrested.

I know that this is true, but I can't prove it. Can you post a link, please?

I'm so glad he got out of there.

Poor kid. I'm glad Logan got out before the abuse escalated even further. I hope he can be placed with people who will cherish him. If he's in the care of his Gpa, I wonder where the parents are? Perhaps being with family isn't the best choice or safest environment for him?
