“WINDERMERE, Fla. - The Windermere Police Department is investigating after a brutal baseball bat attack at a home that left two men dead and a woman injured.

Police say on Thursday night, a 10-year-old child called 9-1-1 from a home on 2908 Sunbittern Court where he lives with his grandparents and reported the home was being burglarized.

The suspect, Ezekiel Emanuel Hopkins was located inside a bathroom in the home. Police say he appeared to have drunk bleach and was not responsive. He was transported to the hospital.

Investigators say Hopkins attempted to steal a vehicle from the home when the homeowners, John and Lisa Savey, confronted him.

"At which time he attacked John Savey, leaving him dead outside the residence. The defendant then went inside the residence and attacked Lisa Savey who had retreated into her home. The defendant also attacked John and Lisa Savey’s son, James Savey, leaving him dead inside the house."

Windermere police say the grandmother told 10-year-old to hide as his grandfather and uncle confronted the suspect when he was trying to steal their pickup truck.“

'It's a horrific situation': 2 dead, 1 injured after brutal attack with baseball bat at Windermere home

That's just terrible!! What is wrong with that man to beat two (nearly three) people to death over a car?! And then he drank bleach on the scene? Sounds like a drug addict to me.

These kinds of cases (also see the Butterfield case in Utah) go to show that if you have a home invasion it's typically safer to call 911 and hide/escape than to try to confront the perpetrator. If someone is horrible and desperate enough to invade your own home, they are most likely horrible and desperate enough to harm or kill you.

Thank goodness the 10-yr-old boy was not hurt (physically).

Two of the deceased family members went outside to confront the suspect as he was attempting to steal their vehicle, which was parked outside. This did not begin as a home invasion. After beating at least 1 man who went outside, the suspect went inside and attacked other family members, killing another and leaving one seriously injured. 2 dead in attack by bat-wielding burglar at Windermere home, police say
In the event of a home invasion, the advice to just call 911 (BBM) is likely to result in grave personal injury - a stranger inside a home can injure or kill well before the police arrive. Hiding or escaping may not be an option, and it is certainly reasonable (and legal in Florida) to fight back. It appears that the victims went outside to confront the suspect, and a door was likely left open, which may have enabled the actual home invasion to occur. In hindsight, staying inside and calling 911 may have been the better tactical choice, but we should not blame the victims for trying to protect their property - or blame the victims at all.

That poor child, how terrifying and life shattering. That poor family.....my Lord this was so brutal.

I agree.

Some of the worst cases I've followed have been home invasion cases by complete strangers.

Even if the victims fully complied or tried to hide these kind of monsters brutally murdered them anyway.

I'm so thankful the little boy survived, but what horrible memories he will have to deal with the rest of his life. I hope he's given therapy.

I've said many times over the years that using a bludgeoning lethal weapon is one of the worst ways to be murdered. Imo.

Home invaders are no longer robbing then leaving. They are doing the most gruesome murders imaginable along with some savagely raping adult female victims, and raping little boys, and girls before they were murdered by the stranger invaders.

I'm afraid with already so much violence we are seeing spreading like toxic waste now all over our country we are going to see more, and more horrific home invasions with deadly results like this one. It explains why gun sales are at an all time high.

They were already on the rise, but it's going to get worse. Imo.

Recently, I've read more news stories where the homeowners have been able to shoot, and injure or kill them before they were killed by the home invaders.

Sadly, for some unknown reason all of these heroic stories doesn't make MSM, but can easily be located in local news where they happened by doing a Google search.

It's not just the elderly being targeted either. These kind of criminals are invading homes where the victims are of all ages. It shows how embolden they've become. They are even striking in broad daylight now.

This is a $1M home near Universal Studios and Disney, not all all where you’d expect a home invasion by a psychotic perp. Did they know this guy? How did the perp pick this family’s vehicle?

It's usually at random. Imo.

Several stranger home invasions have been in upscale neighborhoods from million dollar homes to mansions.

I remember three off the top of my head.

The family who were millionaires in WDC. Darin Wint had never met any of the four he tortured, and murdered in cold blood. He once worked for the man's company years before it happened, but neither one knew each other nor had ever met.

The Pettitt family also didn't know the two stranger home invaders who raped, and murdered three female victims along with almost killing Dr. Pettit. He too was attacked by them using a baseball bat.

The Husted family also lived in a very upscale neighborhood when a stranger home invader came in during the day murdering both parents. Their little son was there too.

Being in an upscale area doesn't immune anyone from being fatal targets.

Several others have lost their lives in brutal ways who lived in what was considered safe upscale neighborhoods.

It shows no one is ever really safe no matter where they may live or whether it's even daylight or night.

I read about another home invasion every few days now with deadly results. Since following them for years now I still keep up with them whether in local surrounding areas or throughout the country.

A few years back an elderly gentleman we knew who lived in the wealthiest part of the city adjoining our county was brutally bludgeoned to death during the day. All he did was open his door that morning to someone who said they were looking for yardwork to do. Once he had his door open the stranger pushed him back inside of his home. They found him with his skull crushed in the kitchen.

But there have been so many more that have been done by strangers invading homes resulting in multiple murders at one time. Its happening in every state now.

Most were done by one sole perp, and others there were two or more involved.

Windermere police said Ezekiel Emanuel Hopkins pushed the community’s gate open with his car then tried to steal a car from the home when he was confronted by the homeowners, John and Lisa Savey.

“We do know that in a video that we saw right here from the front entrance here that he came down the road on a high rate of speed turned into this entrance and pushed the gate open turned his lights off,” Chief David Ogden told News 6.

Windermere was a sleepy little town SE of Winter Garden, located between WG and Universal Blvd. it had some upscale residences and was bordered by Bay Hill country club and golf course. It has experienced a growth of gated communities and million dollar homes over the past few decades. Windermere is located on the Butler chain of lakes.

He doesn't deserve the title," Mr." he's nothing more than an animal that should have been locked up for prior domestic abuse. Until there are laws made and enforced against these violent offenders they will continue to kill the innocent. To bad the bleach didn't do it's job.

The title of this thread is misleading. It appears to me as if the couple was murdered and the son was only injured. JMO

John & James Savey murdered, Lisa Savey injured, seems more accurate.

I think you meant that the father and son were murdered, the wife/mother was injured, in which case your suggested title (the same one I just suggested to a mod!) would be accurate!

Yes, I didn't advise to "just call 911," but to escape or hide along with calling 911. Obviously if someone is attacking you, certainly you need to fight back. Please do not misunderstand me.

In hindsight, staying inside and calling 911 may have been the better tactical choice, but we should not blame the victims for trying to protect their property - or blame the victims at all.

I never blamed the victims and I'm sorry you interpreted it that way. Please re-read my post - I was speaking in general terms about safety and mitigating risk and learning from cases like these.

In my opinion, avoiding confrontation whenever possible is generally the safest course of action. However, I understand that one's initial instinct is to protect one's belongings and I don't blame any one for that. You see someone trying to steal your car and adrenaline kicks in and you race outside and yell "Hey! What the @#$ are you doing?" It's only natural for many to want to take action. But after reading case after case like this, I have formed my own opinion about what would be statistically safest in similar situations, and having formed those opinions in advance, I will be less likely to act on instinct and more likely to take a measured approach that hopefully will keep me away from harm.

I remember when I was about 12 I was with my mom riding bikes. Her purse was in her bike basket and someone came and snatched it out of the basket and ran away. Our adrenaline and indignation and fury kicked in and without even thinking about the dangers we chased after the thief. We actually managed to corner the thief and convince him to give us the purse back. But in hindsight I can't believe we did that and I feel so lucky that the thief wasn't some desperate druggie or sinister psychopath who wouldn't think twice about killing us.

Hope that clarifies any confusion on my original post!

I recently moved to this area (had to look up Windermere to see where it was). I’m surprised it’s not all over the news like a huge story. Maybe because of everything else going on, it’s just a news story....Nothing more, nothing less.

The fact that a man can just ram his car thru a gated community and then attack an innocent family in their home is outrageous and scary as hell. I don’t want to imagine the trauma that is left with this poor woman and child.

I do understand if it's a vehicle being stolen with the suspect never entering someone's home it's better to call 911.

BUT when any of them invade the dwelling it's not going to end well just by complying to their demands.

I've followed way too many cases where the victim/s did everything in their power to stay alive or from being injured by fully complying. In so many cases they were all found tied up, and when the suspect had all the control, and power over them... they murdered them one by one. This was after being beaten unmercifially and/or raped.

At one time home invaders didn't want confrontations. Many would go in when the families weren't home or sneak in undetected during the night to take what they wanted then left.

In so many of these HI cases now they no longer care if the home is occupied whether it's one or multiple people inside or whether it's during the day or at night.

At one time brutal overkills were those LE assumed were done by someone the victims knew. That is no longer the case now because these stranger home invaders have done gruesome overkills to victims they never knew. Plus they are torturing their victims for hours before murdering them as well.

One case that will always stick with me is one who did not end in death, but what all three endured for three days was sadistic. Three strangers burst into the victim's home without warning demanding money. None of the three had any money. Yet they didn't leave. They tied up the two adult men, and all three repeatedly raped the female in front of the helpless men. They took power drills from the victim's home, and drilled into the knees, and ankles of both men.

It was like something straight out of a horror film, but it was the reality for all three victims. They finally left after being there for three days.

All of these horrific acts being done against complete strangers scares me to death because it could happen to any of us at any time.

If anyone invades any home they are up to no good. We only have a split second to fight back. It's far better to try to fight back than lay down complying then becoming completely helpless.

Last year I read where a stranger broke in to a 78 year old woman's home who lived alone. He had already beaten, and raped her twice. He had a gun. Somehow she was able to get her handgun out of a drawer. She shot, and killed him, and she's not the only victim by far who has done so saving their lives, and their families.

Most didn't even have to fire their weapon because like most vile offenders they care nothing about the lives of any other human beings, but they do care about their own worthless lives.

I'm not surprised at all this crime didn't receive more coverage. Also, to the poster that questioned my use of mr, whenever I use a more accurate description of a perp my post goes away. I don't know what is allowed or not.
