Four people in Florida were recently arrested and charged with failing to report child abuse that is believed to have occurred just days before a 3-year-old boy was allegedly murdered last summer.
[snip]
The West Melbourne Police described him as “a typical” boy of his age who “liked pizza, Paw Patrol, and riding his Spider-Man bicycle.” But one thing he lacked, unlike most children, “was someone to fight for him,” authorities said during a press conference on what would have been his fourth birthday — a little over a month after he was killed.

According to Orlando ABC affiliate WFTV, Jaymie Gaucher, 51, Elizabeth Fowler, 37, and Kristal Samuel, 40, were recently charged with failure to report known or suspected child abuse over some of the injuries suffered by the boy. Authorities believe the trio of Health First Center for Child Development employees were aware of abuse that occurred between June 2, 2021 and June 11, 2021 — the aforementioned day that Nance died.

The fourth charged, identified as Dallas Jasper, was a child protective investigator with the Florida Department of Children and Families, according to court papers and news reports.

boyfriend, Joshua Manns, 25, and mother Erica Dotson, 27 were indicted for murder in the first degree in late July 2021. But I am so glad to finally see charges for those who could have stopped it but choose not to despite their mandate to do so.

I was surprised Jameson didn't already have a thread. So some background to this 2021 case:

Investigators said that the child’s mother left the boy in Manns’ care at a home in West Melbourne on the morning of June 11 when she went to work. She told officers that she spoke with Manns around 6 p.m. and had a brief conversation about possibly going to look at a puppy after work, according to an affidavit. At that time, the boy was already dead, police said.

An autopsy later determined that the child had been abused for at least three weeks prior to his death, according to the affidavit. The medical examiner said there were significant signs of hemorrhaging and bruising that were in various states of healing, according to police. Officers said the autopsy also revealed the child had a broken rib, a broken tooth, damage to his esophagus and at least seven stab wounds to the head, at least three of which showed signs of healing. Records show there were no signs of drowning.

WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. (WESH) — Warning: Details in this article are disturbing and graphic and may be upsetting to readers.

An affidavit revealed disturbing new details in the abuse and murder of a Central Florida toddler.

Despite the indications from Dotson and Manns that the boy had drowned, an autopsy instead revealed clear signs of “battered child syndrome” with injuries from weeks ago including a fractured rib, brain swelling and stabs to his head.

Before Jameson’s death, the Florida Department of Children and Families were called “due to a history and concern of possible non-accidental trauma” when the boy broke his leg for a second time.

In the text messages, the report shows Dotson asked Manns to “clean the whole house because CPS will be there in the morning.”

According to the affidavit, the suspects routinely refer to the victim as a “jerk,” and once it was written, “Sorry he’s being such a (vulgarity).”
[snip]
The affidavit reports more texts between the pair after Jameson got out of the hospital, including messages from Dotson complaining about the boy wanting attention and telling Manns he’s right “like always.”

Investigators spoke with a witness who had visited Dotson and asked Nance about a bruise on his neck. The boy reportedly stated, “Josh hit me.” According to the affidavit, when Dotson overheard, she shouted, “Remember what happened last time you lied!”

Little Jameson Nance had a lot of nicknames.

It seems that everyone who met him came up with their own term of endearment for the bubbly child who would have turned 4 years old in July.

To one person, he was "Little Jamie." To another: "Peanut." Someone else called him "J.B." His grandmother Nancy nicknamed him "Cutie Patootie," and his father James lovingly referred to his only child as "The Boy."

"Everybody had a nickname for him," Nancy said during a gut-wrenching memorial service at Cocoa Beach Community Church this week. "We're all in a very sad place right now. We shouldn't be here but here we are."

A Florida mother went on trial this week for the death of her toddler son in 2021.

Erica Dotson and her boyfriend, Joshua Manns, both face charges in the death of 3-year-old Jameson Nance, WESH reports, but a judge severed their cases earlier this year. A date has not been set for Manns’ trial.
