The South Miami man who allegedly killed his wife and posted a photo of her body on Facebook now faces a first-degree murder charge, according to online court records.

Derek Medina, 31, had initially faced charges of second-degree murder, shooting a deadly missile and child neglect without great bodily harm in the Aug. 8 shooting of his wife Jennifer Alfonso, 26.

But he had a court hearing Monday with the updated charges, according to court records. NBC 6 South Florida learned that an indictment was filed, but it was not immediately available.

The South Miami man who allegedly killed his wife and posted a photo of her body on Facebook appeared in court Tuesday, where a judge set his trial date.

Derek Medina's trial is scheduled to begin on Oct. 14. Medina has pleaded not guilty.

Accused Facebook killer wants trial by judge, not jury

With long dark locks and a bushy mountain-man beard, accused Facebook killer Derek Medina blurted out an unusual request to the judge on Thursday.

“May I have a bench trial, please?” Medina asked Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Yvonne Colodny in court.

The impromptu request means Medina would forgo a jury of his peers, instead relying on the judge to rule whether he is guilty of murdering his wife back in August 2013.

Slow down, the judge replied. She called the request premature. Trial is set for March.

Ive seen the original photo. I don't know about "staged", but she definitely wasn't standing upright when she was shot.. IMO, MOO etc. Anyway, not sure if you guys read the caption under the dead body photo "RIP ...." . But the reply "that's my friend there..[tag]Jennifer." Wow.. Just heartbreaking.

According to Miami-Dade's criminal justice case search, the defense filed a motion for continuance on February 19th and it was granted on the 20th. Trial hearing is now scheduled for May 11th at 9:30 am.

"A man accused of killing his wife and then posting a photo of her body on Facebook was removed from a courtroom Wednesday morning after repeatedly interrupting the judge.

Jury selection begins in Derek Medina murder trial

MIAMI - A jury is being chosen in the murder trial of a Miami man whose attorney claims that he shot his wife in self-defense before posting a photo of her corpse on Facebook.

Jury selection was scheduled to begin Tuesday for Derek Medina, 33, in the August 2013 killing of Jennifer Alfonso. The trial was delayed a day for a hearing on evidence issues.
