I've never heard who's kids they were, but did read that they were adopted. I have never heard who placed the kids with them either.

Is it possible for us to change the name of the thread to make it easier to find / post updates on this case?

Parents' names who give up children for adoption aren't made public by state agencies. Unless the birth parents bring themselves to public attention, their names won't be known.

Thre Dollars were first Florida foster parents, then approved for adoptions. All of the Dollars 7 children appear to have been legally adopted through Florida's DCF state adoption agency.

INVERNESS, Fla. -- Five children who say they were abused by their adoptive parents told investigators they were denied food for up to three days and hung by chains in their home, documents released by the State Attorney's Office said.

John and Linda Dollar have pleaded not guilty to five counts of aggravated child abuse after five of their seven children told authorities they had been tortured, and some of the children were starved. Three of the children, ages 12 to 17, were severely malnourished.
.......
The couple's 14-year-old son told Wall that he and his siblings would sleep in the closet of their parent's master bedroom as part of punishment for stealing food. He talked of them being punished though spankings with belts, paddles, switches and whips; getting kicked if they were caught stealing; and on at least one occasion getting struck with a cattle prod.

The 14-year-old also said all five of the children were choked until they either blacked out or couldn't talk. Along with being taped to chairs, chains had been wrapped around their stomachs and their father would hang them until they blacked out, the boy said.

He told Wall of having his toenails ripped off with pliers, saying it hurt "very bad." He said he would scream to make them stop.

I cry like a baby over a hangnail, I can't imagine the pain of having my toenails ripped out with pliers!

This is just heartbreaking.

I know what you mean. The thought of this as a form of punishment is just disgusting. Absolutely sickening. Mortifying.
Those so-called parents by title only should be hung by chains themselves!!!

This reminds me of a self-motivational book about a boy named David who was abused by his mother.... she made him hold his hand over a flame on a stove, would lock him in the basement with no food, etc. He grew up to be very successful and is a motivational speaker and wrote a few books. I hope these children can find some love and support and can grow up to learn that this isn't the norm for how to treat people, or the norm for the way they deserve to be treated. I pray for them to find strength and peace and lots of love.

I read that book. A child called It. I'm not really sure why I read it because I had a knot in my stomach the entire time I read it. I think I just continued to read it hoping it would have a happy ending.
This story gives me that same knot.

WOW. It sounds like we have Saddam Hussein living right here in the USA. May I suggest sending these two sorry excuses of human kind to Iraq. They would certainly fit in.

How do these people qualify to be foster (adoptive?) parents?

Original thread

Maybe someone can merge them.

I pray for these children. Such a tragic tale.

May they find much love, and prosper in their lives.

With HOPE for the children, Lanie

The only reason why I started a new thread was the title of that previous thread made it hard to find for updates.

David's brother (who was abused after David was taken from the home) has now written a book. I cannot imagine what goes on in a parent's head to cause them to inflict such torture on their children. The Dollars seem to be even worse.

Couple charged with child abuse denied bail

Associated Press

Last update: March 16, 2005

INVERNESS -- A Citrus County couple charged with gruesome abuse of five adoptive children were denied bail on Tuesday.

John and Linda Dollar have pleaded not guilty to five counts of aggravated child abuse after five of their seven children told authorities they had been tortured and starved. Three of the children, ages 12 to 17, were severely malnourished, Citrus County Sheriff's investigators say.

Judge Richard A. Howard said the decision to deny bail was based on the seriousness of the allegations, the weight of the evidence, the fact that they have nominal ties to area and that they already fled once. The Dollars live about 70 miles north of Tampa.

.....

Defense attorney Charles Vaughn tried to portray the evidence against the Dollars as circumstantial. He said the Dollars did not call back investigators while on the run because they had the right to remain silent. They did not have to call back.

Vaughan also added that the couple had no criminal history.

Detective Lisa Wall testified that the children had been told to lie if asked about what punishments they had suffered.

.....
Howard said he wanted to have the trial this year. A total of 100 witnesses will be called to testify from both the prosecution and the defense.

Their next hearing will be held on April 11

INVERNESS - John and Linda Dollar, the Beverly Hills couple accused of torturing and starving five adopted children, traveled to Utah to help them think clearly, not to escape the law, the husband said Tuesday.

John Dollar, 59, spoke publicly about the case during a court hearing to get bail set for the couple, who are in the county jail. Circuit Judge Ric Howard denied the request.

"We were seeking God's will into what we were doing," said Dollar.

The Dollars had several problems weighing on their minds at the time of the trip, he said. Shortly after a judge removed the children from the Dollars, the couple drove to Utah.

John Dollar had done real estate appraisal work in Utah, he said, and both thought it was a good place to go to find peace. In addition to the legal problems with their children, they were behind on payments for their RV and feared John Dollar might have prostate cancer, he said.

They had no idea they faced criminal charges and were unaware of a hearing set for Jan. 31 in the child custody case, they said. When their attorney called them and told them of the manhunt, they headed back to Florida, John Dollar said. Before they could make it back, they were arrested in San Juan County, Utah, he said.

Assistant State Attorney Richard Buxman questioned John Dollar about two phone messages he left for Shanda Rae Shelton, the Dollars' 25-year-old adopted daughter who is married and lives in Pasco County.

In the messages, the Dollars told Shelton it would probably be the last time she heard from them and apologized for what they had done, Buxman said.

..........

The Dollars' attorney, Charles Vaughn, told the judge the Dollars should be allowed to live at their home on Pink Poppy Drive in Pine Ridge while the case moves through the court system.

After hearing Vaughn's argument, Howard decided the couple would remain in jail.

He listed several factors in his decision, including allegations the couple intimidated their children, attempted to cover up abuses, fled to Utah after learning of an investigation into their treatment of the children and left messages with their oldest daughter that hinted they planned to kill themselves.

.............
Bruce Barrow, a longtime friend of the Dollars, testified that John and Linda were a normal couple who cared for their children and home.

"They were one big happy family at that time," Barrow said.

Dollars' Children Had `Baggage,' Lawyer Says

By JIM TUNSTALL [email protected]
Published: Apr 12, 2005

INVERNESS - The attorney for John and Linda Dollar, accused of torturing their children, said Monday that the couple were overwhelmed by adopting eight children, some of whom came from dysfunctional families.
``The Dollars thought they could change [the kids'] lives,'' Charlie Vaughan said. ``But they ran into a lot of baggage.''

John Dollar, 59, and his 52- year- old wife each face five counts of aggravated child abuse.

They are accused of torturing some of the children with cattle prods, pliers and hammers. They're also accused of depriving them of food and sleep.

If convicted in a trial tentatively set for Oct. 31, they face 30 years in prison on each charge.

After a court hearing Monday to set a trial date, Vaughan said the case could go to trial or result in a plea deal.

Ya, it's perfectly understandable that they felt the need to use cattle prods, pliers and hammers, and depriving them of food and sleep.

I think the Dollars, need to be chained and have each one of those kids rip a toenail and fingernail out of them and then not feed the Dollars for a few days and see how it feels. Those poor kids,it's bad enough kids have to be taken away from their bio homes because of sick parents and then they are put into another frying pan with sicko foster parents.
